Age here is 79 years - Licensed for 58 years (1959)
Retired after 41 years as a Newspaper and Commercial Photographer (1999) - Married with 2 kids and 2 grandkids - Hobbies: Ham Radio - Photography - Computers
I got my novice license in November of 1959 (KN3KGX) , then my Technican license (K3KGX) a few months later. Shortly after that I was drafted into the Army and worked as a field radio repairman and photographer. I took my Conditional test just before the Army shipped me to Korea. It arrived shortly after I arrived in Korea. Operated the HL9KV ham staion on base. Returned to Ft. Bragg and then back to civilian life.
A couple of years after retiring, my wife and I sold our 5 acre hilltop QTH in North Sewickley Twp. near Beaver Falls, PA and bought a condo unit in Chippewa Twp.. Used a 20 meter dipole in the attic of my condo garage (HOA). Used a Yaesu FT 857D and an Icom ic7000 & MFJ 993B Auto Antenna Tuner.
My wife was licensed as WB3BHK. She passed away from Cancer in January of 2010.
Moved to Oberlin, Ohio in September of 2013 to be closer to family. Now operating as K8KGX (vanity call). Now using an Icom ic7300 and a Icom ic 7000 & tuners but with Little Tar Heel mobile antenna on 3rd floor balcony railing of my apartment.
I use EchoLink, ooVoo programs. I operate HF usually on 40, 20, 17 & 10 meters.on SSB, PSK31 (favorite) and a little CW (slow speed please). Also 2 Meter and 440 Base & Mobile operation with a Kenwood TM-V71 and mobile whip also on my 3rd floor balcony railing.
In December of 2016 I got the vanity call to K8KGX. Got tired of explaining why I had a 3 call and lived in the 8th call district.
