I got interested in ham radio in high school. There was one operator, Bill and his call was W2TJF. He told me that if I wanted to know electronics and be a good ham, read the ARRL Handbook. I got a copy and read the first couple of pages and guess I lost interest.

Fast forward to 1968 and the Viet Nam War. I was in DaNang and filled in for guys at the MARS station. I got my code speed to about 5 wpm and studied the Q&A manual but never took the novice.

Fast forward to 1994. I got out of the Navy and proceeded to take a class and got my Tech Plus licence. At the time I passed my test, the FCC was transitioning from paper to computers. Needless to say, I was a paper guy and it took 4 months to get my ticked. The following year I upgraded to General. Finally, in 2004 I upgraded to Extra.

When I upgraded to general, I changed my call from KE4MIL to K4MIL and have held it since. I operate Phone, RTTY, JT-65, and am in the process of building my CW code speed up. I have done several mini expedition to Guantanamo Bay where my call is KG4SS.

I enjoy contesting and am a member of the Potomac Valley Radio Club which is a contest club. I have been a guest operator at The Goat Farm, NR4M's QTH, for several Contest. I enjoy chasing DX but due to antenna restriction only have 270 confirmed. I have the following awards for K4MIL: DXCC (Phone), 8 band DXCC, and ARRL Triple Play Award. For KG4SS, I have WAS (RTTY) and DXCC (RTTY). I am a big fan of LOTW.
