Off the air except once in a blue moon and changed my callsign to NZ5F. I have made less than 200 QSOs in 2017 so far.  It looks very unlikely that I will work one ATNO in 2017.  This would be the first year where I don't work even one ATNO.   I am going to get a station and antenna up for Bouvet next year but other than that entity not really planning to be on much in next year or so.

Below are some family photos of me, Susanna (my wife), Maximiliano (aka Max), and Anastasia (aka Anastasia / Ana or Annie).

The photos below are from when Anastasia was born. Susanna did an amazing job. What a great Mom!!!

Max in San Jose, CA summer of 2015.

Max at Disneyland at Goofy's Kitchen spring of 2015.

This is me in July 2017.  Fifty years old and still as studly as ever.  Pushing for PRs in bench press!

My History in the Hobby

My favorite hobby is ham radio (my second favorite is snowboarding).  I was first licensed on Dec 20, 2010 (now over five years licensed).  I decided to get into the hobby because when I was a kid (from 12 to 16 years old) I was an active SWLer using my father's zenith transoceanic and a realistic DX-200.  I built shortwave receiving antennas including a small rhombic for SWLing and collected QSL cards and other awesome trinkets from mailing to the broadcast stations my SINPO reports. I wish I had the QSL cards that I collected but they are lost save one from Radio Japan.  Some of my best recollections of the hobby including visiting my penpal (remember those days) who lived in Hamburg, Germany when I was 16.  I met him through Radio Budapest DX club.  I spent the summer in Germany and Switzerland with him and his family and some other friends (traveled with my best friend Bob Smith from Waretown NJ to visit his grandmother) who lived outside Stuttgart (Dettingen unter Teck).  It was an awesome trip.

Another fond memory was all the cool trinkets i received (memories now for they are all gone); cool calendars from VOFC (Voice of Free China) and Chinese New year memorabilia, record albums of Brahms from Radio Budapest, communist propaganda books from Radio Burcharest, a QSL card from Radio Baghdad showing dead bodies from the Iran / Iraq war, etc, etc, etc.  SWLing was a great hobby now all but dead with the advent of the internet.  By the time I got interested in becoming a ham, I was 17 and started liking cars, parties and girls better than radio.  I eventually shelved the hobby and at 18 joined the US Navy where I studied as an electronic technician and nuclear reactor operator and was stationed on the USS Enterprise from 1988 to 1991.

In late 2010, I was re-introduced to ham radio through a ham in Ramona, CA when I purchased some antique SWL radios from him.  His name is Duane, AA6EE.  He said why not become a ham.  I said I didn't have time for all the studying, and then he told me the CW requirement was removed and that they dumbed down the tests.  I studied for about three weeks and took and passed all three exams.  Since getting my extra I have spent a lot of time learning CW and am proficient enough to DX on CW without decoders but that is about it. I really want to get good at it because it is an awesome mode.

I was very active from a great QTH in San Diego where I had two towers and modest multi band HF yagis (at first a K4KIO hex beam, then 3 element steppir, and finally a combo of Mosley S33 and Pro 57B on two different towers) on an edge of a 232' canyon with ocean views.

This is my old antenna set up in San Diego.  You wonder how I got to over 290 entities in about three years.  Well QTH means everything in this hobby.  Great QTHs provide opportunities that average ones never will.  That is why I am looking hard at the next home I purchase in San Antonio Texas area.

Current DX statistics:

Finally received my 305 sticker prior to my five year anniversary as a licensed amateur operator.  I have 308 worked and 308 confirmed for Mixed DXCC.

Worked my first European 6m terrestial DX contact, EA6SX, ever on July 13, 2016.  It was #31 DXCC on 6m.  It is one of my most exciting contacts ever.  So stoked!!!  Have since worked CT1, CN8, EA8, and EA7 this season for a really amazing DX 2016.

308 DXCC worked with 307 confirmed. Worked Heard Island for 305 (a single 30m CW contact) and Juan de Nova (20m phone and 17m CW) for 306, and 5A1AL on 20m CW for 307, and T31T for 308.  The pace of adding new DXCC ATNOs is slowing down.

  • 6m DX with 36 entities (20 worked in DM12 and 16 worked in EL09) worked and 32 confirmed.
  • VUCC from DM12lo at 295 grids worked and 185 confirmed.
  • VUCC from EL09 at ~200 grids worked and 100 confirmed on LOTW.
  • WAS basic award. 6m WAS current stats 46 states worked, 40 confirmed from dm12lo.
  • WAS 6m from EL09 in progress.
  • My favorite band is 6m for DX and grid chasing.

Below is a picture of me and my son, Max, from a few years ago.  Max is five years old and heading to Kindergarten in the Fall.  He is super bright and already speaks Spanish and English fluently.  We have started Max o Mandarin Chinese and he takes classes at University of Texas San Antonio for Chinese.  He is very talented with languages just like his mom.

Below is a picture of some of my favorite QSL cards (6m QSLs).

Max dreaming of his favorite band 6m!!  No other band is as wonderful and frustrating as 6m.  It is band that has our entire family hooked on ham radio for life (just kidding, wife isn't too thrilled about this goofy hobby).

Below is a picture of me and my wife Susanna at my sister's wedding a few years ago. She is a wonderful wife and mother for Max and Ana.

We just had our 16th anniversary on May 4, 2017.  I can hardly believe how fast the time goes by!!!

Below is a picture of my little angels, Roxy and Bentley. They are cavalier king charles spaniels and were our kids before Max came around.  They are still my fur babies and I love them so much.
