I was first licensed in 1993 as N1UYE with a Tech Plus ticket. This was a direct result of tutelage I received from the Aroostook Amateur Radio Association, K1FS. They are a great organization in northern Maine which fosters interest in amateur radio communication by holding monthly meetings, setting up a great camp site for Field Day, providing communications for local events including the annual Can-Am dogsled race and much, much more. They provide local testing so that prospective amateurs can get their licenses without driving to distant destinations. They also maintain a repeater with autopatch on 146.730 and have a weekly training net. I made several contacts with this call sign, mostly 15M CW, and I still have QSL cards from that time.

It wasn't long before Tech Plus privileges weren't enough so I upgraded to General within a couple of months, and my call sign became N1WAO. I had this call sign until I moved from Maine to Missouri where I filed with the FCC to get a call sign in the 10th call area. They assigned me KC0HWX. Then the vanity call sign rules came around. Taking advantage of the new options, I opted for a call sign that reflected my other hobby (and my job), Linux and Open Source development, and acquired the call sign K5TUX.

I am currently an active amateur, typically operating CW, PSK31, SSB and FreeDV.  For more than six years, I have been co-host of the amateur radio podcast, Linux in the Ham Shack.  My original co-host, Richard, KB5JBV, is also the host of Resonant Frequency: The Amateur Radio Podcast.  He is currently on hiatus, but I now co-host with Pete Landry, VE2XPL.  Our show records every other Monday night at 8:00pm CT, and information can be found at http://lhspodcast.info.

Thank you for stopping by, and perhaps I'll hear you on the air.
