Retired from the oil industry as a board certified safety professional. The last 8 years of my career was on assignment in the oil fields on the north slope of Alaska which helped redefine my definition of cold. Alaska is one of the most visually stunning places on earth, but periodic winter temps as low as -90 degree with the wind chill factor sometimes took the fun out of the job. I've since retired to a much more moderate climate in Eastern Washington.

I've been a ham for over 25 years with several work and family related sabbaticals mixed in. My initial passion in the hobby was chasing DX. Unfortunately, the more I became involved, the more I witnessed DXCC program politics and an overall decline in operating practices were severely effecting the DX world in a negative way.

Increasing abysmal operator on-air practices, the creation of several flimsy entities, the acceptance of remote stations for DXCC credit (It's now OK to operate from the moon according to the DXCC committee) and up to 20 years between activations of some of the more remote locations reduces the program to a last man standing hobby. Bottom line is if you live long enough, you're probably capable of obtaining the coveted #1 honor roll. I honestly pity anybody just starting out on a DXCC quest. I still have the DX passion, and will eventually "get all of them" but began to search for something else...

Early in 2017 I began to investigate other aspects of the hobby. I discovered Summits On The Air (SOTA) http://www.sota.org.uk . which is a program that began in 2002 in Great Britain. It's spreading like wild fire in the USA and offered me an opportunity to combine my interest in amateur radio with operating portable on battery and solar power. It's been extremely refreshing to experience the polite and cordial pile ups during SOTA activations I've chased so far. I'm truly looking forward to this new aspect of the hobby.
