My "shack" is a small corner cupboard in a hilltop living room that overlooks a San Francisco panorama stretching from the Pacific Ocean in the west to San Francisco Bay and the Oakland hills in the east. With a bit of wire and a few watts I've been able when all else is just right to QSO with our east coast and with Alaska, Hawaii, New Zeland, Guam, China, Japan, Russia, Ukraine, Lituania, Germany, Belgium, Ireland, Spain and with HS0ZIN 7,901 miles distant in Tailand (my most distant contact yet).  For an antenna I typically use a portable LNR Precision EF-20 end fed dipole strung up in a nearby tree and run either a Yaesu FT-817 ND sometimes pushed up to 45 watts by a compact Tokyo Hy-Power HL-45B mini amplifier or an Icom IC-718.  In addition to my end fed dipole I also have used at times a long wire with an Icom AH-4 antenna tuner as well as a Buddipole verticle.  I'm a member of the San Francisco Radio Club (W6PW) and co-founder (with Jim KW6L) of the club's 20-meter-get-together at 14.328 MHz on Saturaday, 9:00 am local (San Francisco/Pacific Coast) time. The get-together is open to all hams, club members or not, local or distant. Tune in if you have a chance.  You will be w 73 Jack K6ZQ
