Ham Member Lookups: 265

From an early age of about 16, I was interested in radio communication that began with CB radio and shortwave listening. I never graduated to amateur radio until later in life and got my technician license in 2007. Now I wonder how much I missed during the years in between.  I purchased my first 2 meter radio, listened in for a few hours and then made my first contact.

When I passed my technician test, I decided that if I was going to do this then I needed to do something with it.  I feel that it is important to use the equipment as much as possible. and keep it in operating condition and ready to go at a moments notice.   I did some research and found that there were over 200 licensed "HAM's" in my community.  I approached my local community leaders to see if they were interested in using Ham radio operators in support of community events. They gave me a resounding "YES".

With the help of a few other Ham's we started a local community net, that is held each week. Our local net has been going for 5 years now and our members have joined together to provide communications support to our community.

UPDATE  July 2014

I recently passed my General exam and am looking forward to expanding my radio skills and horizons.   My first license was KE7OJX and I used that until just a few days ago when I obtained a vanity license of K7BTU.    I have worked in refrigeration for over 35 years and I mentioned in jest to some of my co-workers that I should have been issued BTU as my suffix.    A few weeks ago I was thinking about that conversation and decided to see if the suffix of BTU was available.   Well, it was and so I applied for the vanity call sign and was granted it a couple of weeks ago and received my license in the mail today.
