I LIKE   RECEIVING PAPER QSL CARDS . I RESPOND TO ALL REQUESTS FOR MY CARD VIA DIRECT OR BURO. NO GREEN STAMPS OR SASE REQUIRED. SWL REPORTS  ARE WELCOME &    ANSWERED. NO LOTW OR E QSL.

THANKS TO GG GRAPHICS FOR REPRODUCING MY OLD C. FRITZ CARD FROM 1970. (SEE ABOVE)

THANKS FOR STOPPING BY MY QRZ PAGE. GETTING BACK ON THE AIR AFTER MANY YEARS OF INACTIVITY. MY INTEREST IN AMATEUR RADIO STARTED WHILE ATTENDING CASS TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL IN DETROIT,MI. ONE OF THE ELECTRONICS INSTRUCTORS WAS A HAM & ENCOURAGED HIS STUDENTS TO GIVE HAM RADIO A TRY. MY FRIEND FRED SCHELTER (K8IVC) SK & I TOOK THE CHALLENGE AN BEGAN STUDYING THE LICENSE MANUEL & THE CODE. WE TOOK THE NOVICE EXAM IN THE SUMMER OF 1958.I WAS ISSUED THE CALL KN8LGY ON JULY 1, 1958. IN THOSE DAYS THE NOVICE LICENSE WAS ONLY GOOD FOR A YEAR & NOT RENEWABLE. AFTER SOME MORE STUDYING & GETTING OUR CODE SPEED UP  TO  20 WPM , TO HAVE A LITTLE CUSHION ,WE WENT TO THE FEDERAL BUILDING IN DETROIT TO TAKE THE GENERAL EXAM. I REMEMBER  THE EXPERIENCE QUITE VIVIDLY AFTER ALL THESE YEARS. WE TOOK THE BUS TO THE FEDERAL BUILDING IN DOWNTOWN DETROIT. WENT UP TO THE 6TH FLOOR WHERE THERE  WERE SEVERAL OTHER PEOPLE WAITING IN THE HALL TO TAKE VARIOUS FCC EXAMS. THE FCC ENGINEER  IN CHARGE WAS RICHARD COTTON (W8DX ) SK. WE WERE USHERED INTO   A ROOM TO FIRST TAKE THE RECEIVING PORTION OF THE CODE   TEST.  IF YOU PASSED THE RECEIVING PORTION YOU GOT TO TAKE THE SENDING PORTION ON A OLD  WW2  J-38 KEY.THIS ELIMINATED ABOUT  70% , LEAVING ONLY 3 OR 4 TO TAKE THE WRITTEN EXAM . FCC EXAMINERERS WERE NOT IN THE LEAST INTERESTED IN INCREASING THE RANKS OF HAM RADIO UNLIKE THE VE SYSTEM OF TODAY. A TEST WAS TO ELIMINATE UNQUALIFIED  APPLICANTS.THE WRITTEN TEST  WAS ESSAY TYPE NO MULTIPILE CHOICE  , NO LIST OF CORRECT ANSWERS, OR PRACTICE TESTS. YOU  ONLY HAD THE LICENSE MANUEL TO STUDY, WHICH ONLY GAVE YOU A ROUGH OUTLINE OF WHAT WAS ON THE TEST. YOU HAD TO WRITE OUT YOUR ANSWERS , DRAW CIRCUITS. & SHOW ALL YOUR CALCULATIONS. I THOUGHT THE TEST WAS PRETTY HARD, BUT   WE BOTH MANAGED TO PASS THE CODE & WRITTEN TEST & WERE NEWLY MINTED K8LGY & K8IVC IN DEC 1958.

THE CODE TEST REQUIREMENT WAS A GREAT GATE KEEPER FOR AMATEUR RADIO & SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN ELIMINATED. CW 4 EVER

I WAS VERY ACTIVE FOR  ABOUT 10 YEARS. I OPERATED 100% CW WITH  A VIKING RANGER  ll & A COLLINS 75S3B . I STILL HAVE THIS RIG & IT HAS BEEN RESTORED & BACK ON THE AIR. THEN INCENTIVE LICENSING CAME ABOUT IN 1968. THIS & SCHOOL & KIDS & LIFE GRADUALLY TOOK THERE TOLL & MY ACTIVITY GRADUALLY WENT DOWN. FINALLY WENT PRETTY MUCH INACTIVE FOR 20 PLUS YEARS.

I RETIRED IN 2004 FROM DETROIT EDISON AFTER FORTY YEARS OF SERVICE .IWORKED AS A POWER LINEMAN  FOR 20 YEARS . I FINISHED   MY CAREER  AT DETROIT EDISON  IN THE ENGINEERING DEPT DESIGNING SUBSTATIONS & DISTRIBUTION CIRCUITS . WITH  ALL THE FREE TIME BEGAN THINKING ABOUT GETTING BACK ON THE AIR.  FINALLY IN 2014 I PUT UP A HYGAIN TH3MK4 3 ELEMENT YAGI ON MY EXISTING 50' TOWER & 2 G5RV ONE N.S. ONE E.W. IN INVERTED VEE CONFIGURERATION. I STILL  OPERATE 100% CW MOSTLY WITH A STRAIGHT KEY OR VARIOUS PADDLES OR VIBROPLEX BUGS. YOU CAN'T HAVE TOO MANY KEYS. I LIKE CHASING DX & SLOW SPEED CW RAGCHEWING ON 40 & 80 M. OTHER HOBBIES INCLUDE RESTORING OLD CARS. PHOTOGRAPHY, WOODWORKING, & CUSTOM PICTURE FRAMING.

MY CURRENT MAIN RIG IS A KX3 & 100 WATT AMP ALSO A ICOM IC-718. ALSO HAVE A K2 & A K1  & SEVERAL ROCK MITES THAT I USE FOR QRP OPERATIONS. BUT MY REAL LOVE IS OLD TUBE GEAR (MY ERA). HAVING FUN WITH MY VIKING RANGER & COLLINS 75S3B THAT ARE NOW OPERATIONAL & BACK ON THE AIR. MY NEW PROJECT IS A HEATHKIT DX-20 (MY NOVICE RIG) & A DX-60B THAT I HOPE TO GET BACK ON THE AIR SOON.
