The home I share with XYL Kathy, KD7OTY, was once part of base housing at a U.S. Air Force radar station; about 5 air miles West of Condon, Gilliam County; Oregon. Condon is a small town in North-Central Oregon, population about 1,000+. I am a member of the following Amateur Radio organizations and clubs:

ARRL, WRRL Charter Member #16, QRP-ARCI #4791, NWQRP #500, NAQCC #2904, FISTS NW #44, FISTS International #6242, SKCC #3658, 10-10 International #50200 and The Adventure Radio Society, #792. I am also a member of Skywarn; supporting NWS Pendleton. We moved here from Fossil, Wheeler County, Oregon in December, 2008. I am now retired, as of several months ago; due to increasing health problems that has forced my wife and I to close our long time antenna design and manufacturing business. I hope to again become active in amateur radio activities; especially SKYWARN and other EmComm related nets and activities. My new Elecraft KX1 kit will soon be finished, and I'm hoping to put it to good use this summer using it for field portable operations in conjuction with off-roading in our Toyota FJ Cruiser.

I was first licensed in 1959 at age 9 in my native state of Indiana. I am a former U.S. Army Signal Corps operator; serving in Vietnam in the late 60's and early 70's and now a 90% service connected disabled veteran as a result. I served in both the Army and Coast Guard, and I am a former law enforcement officer, paramedic, emergency services dispatcher and county emergency programs coordinator. I am the former ARES EC, Lake County MT, former ARES AEC/Training, Yamhill County, Oregon, former Director of Communications, MT Wing, Civil Air Patrol, U.S.A.F. Aux., and Army MARS operator, AAR0PH.

My interests include EmComm operations, QRP field ops., CW, rag chewing, flying whenever a chance to do so occures, and antenna design and building. I am a member of ARRL Oregon Section, District 3. My primary rig is an Icom IC-706Mk2g, with a Yaesu FT-857D in my Toyota FJ Cruiser. I have additional rigs and equipment as well. I operate 160-10M HF and 6/2M and 70 CM bands using SSB, CW and some digital modes. My favorite mode is CW from the field. My home station is equipped for extended emergency power operations and I also have mobile/portable capabilities with a well equipped Toyota FJ Cruiser SUV. I am collecting equipment for building a cross-band mobile remote/repeater for my FJ Cruiser; as well as a cross-band repeater for my county. My XYL and I are half of the total ham population of Gilliam County, and our location gives us extremely good U/VHF line-of-sight coverage in all directions for many, many miles! We routinely work stations all over Oregon, Washington and parts of Idaho on FM simplex. We hope to soon build a cross-band repeater here at the home QTH that will allow U/VHF networking between the Western parts of Oregon and areas in North-Central and Eastern Oregon, as well as Central Washington and Western Idaho in support of EmComm operations.
