Rig is ICOM -765 that drives an Ameritron 811 amplifier which finally drives either a 40 meter Delta loop or a Broadband Hex beam 20-6 meters.

My airplane and my trailer.  Camping and flying are two of the things I enjoy most.

If I am not in the camper I would rather be in the airplane. I still have to figure out how to get radios in both.

I decided I wanted I wanted a new antenna so I decided to build a new Broadband hex beam.  Unfortunatly, I had to have a place to put the antenna so I built a 40' crank up tilt over tower first.

I dug a hole 4' deep, welded up an angle iron base, dropped it in the hole and filled it with 400 lbs of concrete.

This is the tower attached to the base and tilted over.

After finishing the tower or nearly finishing, it's the usual 90% done 90% to go, it was time to build the Hex.  I folowed the instructions on K4KIO seb site http://www.hex-beam.com/.  His instructions were very clear and accuate.  Most of it I built from scratch except for the spreader arms.  It was cheaper to buy them in a kit than make them from scratch. I thought I would save a lot of money by  building it from scratch, but I don't think I saved anything.

I knew the dimensons when I was making it but somehow seeing it built on my deck brought home the true size of my new Broadband Hex.

The finished product erected on the tower and elevated to 40'.

The SWR is very flat and low across 5 of the bands (I don't have a 6 meter radio to test the sixth band).  I noticed 1 full S- unit  recieced and have been told there is a clear improvemet over my 40 meter delta loop.  The noise floor is higher with the Hex than the Delta loop, but loops are known to be very quiet antenas.  The antenna is so light that I bought an old radio shack rotator that works well.
