Migrated to North Carolina in 1993 - went radio silent for 20+ years

Rekindled my interests in operating during the holidays in 2014.  Broke out my Kenwood TS-440SAT and purchased a Timewave Navigator to try out the digital modes.  Having a great time on PSK-31.  Looking to get more active on all the bands and brushing up on my CW again.  The following year I decided to upgrade to a new modern radio and bought an HF/VHF/UHF Yaesu FT-991.

Interests in contesting, ARRL Sweepstakes, CQWW, ARRL DX Contest, 10 Meter Contest, flying as a private pilot and enjoy traveling especially to warm climates with my lovely wife.

10-10 Club Certificate #11513

Currently retired after spending 36 years in the Computer, Storage and IT business as a design engineer and executive management.

My modest(and growing) station currently consists of the following:

12/2016 - Yaesu FTdx3000 for HF/SSB/Digital Modes 80-6M
11/2015 - Yaesu FT-991 for SSB/FM/Digital 80-6M, VHF, UHF
80M Dipole, 3-band(40m,20m,10m) fan dipole, 15m delta loop, 128' Inv-L

12/2016 - 10M loop, 30m, 17m, 12m fan dipole

1/2017 - 20M delta loop
9/10/2017 - 6m Dipole
Kenwood TL-922A Linear Amplifier
LDG AT-1000ProII and LDG AT-200Pro tuners
RETIRED -> Kenwood TS-440SAT + Timewave Navigator for digital modes
8/15/2017 - microHam u2R - SO2R controller
11/7/2017 - Pair of Bandpasser II filters to improve my SO2R configuration
11/7/2017 - SPE Expert 1.5K FA Solid State Linear Amplifier

Expect to experiment with some other antennas. Recently added 88' Inverted-L and 15m delta loop antennas in time for the 2016 CQWW SSB contest.  The 15m delta worked well.  The Inverted-L provided mixed results.  I think I need a remote tuner and additional radials for this one to perform better. Next I may expand the delta loop for 20, 17, 12 and 10 meter bands.

11/30/2016 - Updated my station with a Yaesu FTdx3000.  It replaces my 30 year old Kenwood TS-440SAT.  Couldn't pass up the great holiday pricing and rebates. smiley

12/20/2016 - I've had the FTdx3000 for a couple weeks now.  Used it for the ARRL 10M contest. Despite very bad conditions on the second day here in NC, the rig performed great and I made 296 QSO's, for 21,312 points.  It's the best performing radio I've owned.  Really happy with this rig and glad I bought it.

I also added a 10M loop and a 30M, 17M and 12M fan dipole to add to my web of wires in the trees in the yard.  Next antenna project is to add a 20M delta loop.  I hope to get a warm day over the 2016 holidays to get that one up.

My airplane to satisfy my other hobby/passion.  Maybe some aeronautical mobile in the future?  More likely a remote operation from the Bahamas and other vacation spots along the east coast with my recently assembled go kit with my FT-991.

1/14/2017 - Designed and printed a new QSL card.

1/20/2017 - I finally got around to adding a 20M delta loop to my antenna mix.  It's up about 40 feet with my existing 15M delta loop is now nested with it.  Seems to be working well so far.  Next on the list for antenna enhancements will be to add a 6M antenna and a remote antenna tuner for my Inverted-L.

9/10/2017 - Finally got around to putting my auto tuner at the base of my Inverted-L and extended it's height and length to enable operation on 160M.  Hopefully I'll be able to pick up a few more multipliers on that band in the upcoming contest season.  Also tossed up a simple 6m dipole at about 15 feet to spend a little time in ARRL VHF Contest and work some digital modes.

11/28/207 - Made some improvements in my SO2R contest station setup this past month.  Added bandpass filters for each radio that automatically follow the radio to the proper band.  Added a new solid state amplifier and SPE Expert 1.3K FA.  Very nice fully automatic amplifier based on a single LDMOS transistor.  Aside from initial "pre-tuning" the amplifier follows the radio band changes and selects the 1 of 4 antennas.  I am only using 2 antennas at the moment.  A project in the works that will automatically and wirelessly switch any of 8 antennas to my 2 radios.  I have most of the HW in place, but need to finish some controller software to get this working.  One of my December projects.  Also decided to submit for some ARRL and CQ award certificates.

My operation award certificates.
