I have always enjoyed Ham Radio. I got my license when I was a kid. I was lucky to grow up with two wonderful mentors or Elmer’s, my father and my brother. They were always building new antennas, radio or electronic stuff. When I was a kid you could always find junk parts around to build transmitters or linear amplifiers. It was the time of Knight Kits, Eico and Heathkit. They were simple electronic construction kits that allowed you to learn and grow. Those times have come and might have gone.

Building Ham transmitters and antennas was a great prelude to start working in broadcasting on radio and TV gear. The Ham radio license structure was a nice set up to getting my FCC 1st class commercial license.  I stayed in broadcasting as an engineer after college untill retiring from full time work a few years ago. With children and work, time became a premium and so I let my ham radio license expire at some point.  A couple years ago I took the test again and I am having fun back in ham radio. I still enjoy building antennas, electronic stuff and learning.

I have been very blessed over the years to meet some wonderful people because of Ham radio. It is a great hobby and has been a real treat for me.

Below was some of the ham gear I had as a kid.

Much of it was homemade or modified stuff. The gear then was very different then todays equipment.

For me it has all been a lot of fun learning and experimenting.

Below is some of the current antenna tuners and switch gear.
