Hi! My name is Abby (AB1BY - formerly KC1FFX), I am 13 years old and I received my Technician Class license in March of 2016 at the age of 11 and upgraded to General Class license in December 2016 at the age of 12. I just passed my Extra Class license on April 30, 2017 - 1 day after my 13th birthday! I would not have passed my Extra Class exam without help from my dad (AC1DC) and from my elmer Fred (AB1OC) who spent many hours tutoring me and helping me study. I was proud to present Fred (AB1OC) an ARRL Elmer Award for all of his hard work at one of our club meetings.

I really love HF, contesting and of course DX! I participated in the ARRL's Kids Day from my  father's station in January of 2015 and that's what got me hooked on HAM radio! I love participating in the ARRL Rookie Round Ups. I've participated in the RR Voice, RRTY and CW as a multi op team with my club and each time we've won for Area 1. I've also been involved with two successful High Altitude Balloon launches and we are getting started with planning a spring launch in 2018. I also enjoy portable and mobile operations. Our club has done some POTA (Parks on the Air) and SOTA (Summits on the Air) events and I have really enjoyed them.
In 2016 I enjoyed participating in the ARRL Rookie Roundup - Voice, RTTY and  CW (I'm very slow, but getting better) as part of a multi op team using our club's call sign (N1FD) and we won all three for Area 1!  I have also participated in Field Day for the Nashua Area Radio Society (N1FD), the 13 Colonies Event for New Hampshire as K2K, National Parks on the Air (NPOTA) - Activating NS60 - Saint Gaudens National Historic Park as N1FD, Summits on the Air (SOTA), CQ WW DX Contest and several Youth Outreach Programs with my club!

2017 was another busy year for me and my club (Nashua Area Radio Society). I've continued to be very active and my best accomplishment this year was passing my Amateur Extra Class license. It took a lot of time with all the studying! I started studying months before our clubs licensing class and also spent my whole school vacation week studying. The day after my 13th birthday I received the best present - a passing grade on the Amateur Extra test! I continue to participate in the Rookie Roundups, POTA, SOTA and our High Altitude Balloon projects. I've also made some satellite contacts this year and have recently gotten into some "fox hunting." Another highlight of my year was my appearance on HAM NATION with Gordon West (WB6NOA). It was very cool to talk with Mr. West. I used his books and listened to his CDs when studying for all the levels of my licenses! You can check out the episode here. I hope to be back on in 2018!

As you can see I have been very active and really love this hobby! I am so very lucky to have joined the best club around, the Nashua Area Radio Society (N1FD).  I would not have had the opportunity to participate in nearly as many activities if it weren't for the club and its great membership!

Look for me on the air under my own call sign or participating in a great activity with N1FD!
