Ham Member Lookups: 81

Passed the Technician and General tests in March 2017, Extra in June 2017.  As a tribute to the few remaining people that can do so, I took my Extra test using the slide rule I used to earn my BSEE instead of a calculator..

I'm a degreed Electrical Engineer (Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology '75) that has worked 40+ years in manufacturing and recently became interested in ham radio while working with others in the community on Emergency Preparedness.

Our group of ten (which included my XYL KC3JAS) studied and tested together, with all passing the Technician test, much to the consternation of the VEs!

Since then, one of the group has passed the General test.

Ran Mobile/Base VHF/UHF initially and just finished my initial HF set up which I find to be much more interesting.

HF setup includes a Kenwood TS-590SG, SDRPlay and an end fed dipole due to terrain restrictions, which so far, has been giving me excellent results.

Having exploited technology in my professional career, I am extremely impressed with what the Ham Community has developed with all of the various operating methods.

I find it a bit humorous that occasionally I run into an "Old Timer" that scoffs, "THAT ain't Ham Radio!" when discussing various technologies.

I usually point out to him that a true Master Craftsman in any field has a wide selection of tools in his tool box, and knows how to use all of them, depending upon the job at hand.

This discussion usually ends in a series of grunts and mumbles.

I am really enjoying the hobby and look forward to retiring soon so I can spend more time on it.

One of my major objectives after retirement is to become proficient in Morse Code.  Although no longer required for the license, I think it is a key tool for my tool box.
