Welcome to my bio!

I have been a ham since around mid 1993. I began using voice, and quickly migrated to packet, where I still play. My focus is more on the Digital modes today, including Packet, RoIP systems such as Echolink and IRLP, DMR (http://www.trbo.org) and Amateur 802.11 Wireless (http://www.hamwan.org).

We run  BPQ32 for packet nodes. Currently we run EWAWAN:K7TJ-9 and GEGLAN:WS7I-9 as our 2 primary nodes. We use a variety of radios, but all of the backend systems are run under VMWare's ESXi 5.5 host environment and Win7-32bit. These servers are located at my QTH, then fed to the hilltops via 802.11 wireless. Once at the hilltops, we use Digi TS4 Port Servers to convert the virtual IP serial port to physical serial ports. With the TNC and Radios being the only equpment located at the hilltop. Our Eastern Washington Packet Systems can be seen here.

This also allows us to use other network based systems, such as 802.11 wireless network to provide amateur radio services to folks in the field or at their homes with amateur based systems. Users nominally get between 2 and 10Mbps worth of connectivity. This allows our users to have "normal" connectivity when trying to serve disasters or events where we require any sort of high speed network connections.

Professionally, I am a Network Engineer. The company I work for is primarily a Cisco shop. Though for certain applications we also employ Alcatel, GE and a handful of other vendors.

I also have a background as a two-way radio technician. I have experience on voice and data systems in the VHF, UHF and 800MHz bands. I also have Mobile Data systems experience and digital and analog microwave experience. Basically 1200baud to 622Mbps (OC12) technologies. I have working knowledge and understanding of Cisco, Mikrotik, Alcatel-Lucent (Nokia), pfSense, Netgear, Ubiquiti and several other networking platforms.

I am into infrastructure building for Amateur Radio systems. I do climb towers (though less these days..), I build repeaters and other systems specifically designed for Mountaintop uses.
