      My Elmer...WB2BDN

The year is 1967. My two brothers and I are watching Star Trek. The screen on the tv goes cross hatch and I hear "CQ CQ CQ 6 meters". I get on my bike and find his house. He spots me standing outside looking at his tower. He opened the front door and said "Hey kid whats up". Best of friends after that and he let me operate his station. He also gave me the Ameco code book. He had an Alfa Romeo convertible in his garage and would once in a while take me on a fast ride. My salute to John...WB2BDN.

With the use of the Ameco code book I studied code at lunchtime at work in the early 80's. Took the test at the FCC building in NYC and became N2EMD. Working ssb from my garden apartment became a challenge. After setting off the fire alarm a couple times I decided to operate mobile. By the late 80s I wanted more spectrum so I got my code speed up to 13 wpm and passed the advanced class and was issued the call KD2JF. By this time I had my own house so the antenna farm started. By the mid-90s I was operating the amateur satellites. I still operate the sats today though with a much more low profile set-up with two eggbeaters and my old FT-847. HF ssb and satellite are what I'm doing today and still in love with radio in general. See you on the air.
