I have been a ham radio operator since 1992. After 22 years, I finally made it to extra class licensee. I am the Amateur Radio Emergency Coordinator for Johnston County, NC. If you are interested in finding out more about Johnston County ARES, you can e-mail me through here or go to our websiteand contact me through there.
I also belong to Johnston Amateur Radio Society(JARS)where I am the president as well as the newsletter editor.
Also, I recently received my certification as a Volunteer Examiner (VE). So, I can now help in administering exams to new hams and those wanting to upgrade. In addition to being a VE, I am also an instructor for those wishing to learn about ham radio and hopefully get their license and enjoy the hobby as much as I do.
My ham shack consists of: Yaesu FTM-400D for VHF/UHF voice operations, Yaesu FT-8800 for VHF/UHF simplex, TYT TH-9000 for 220 MHz, CS800 for DMR, Icom IC-706MK IIG for HF.
I also have the following scanners in the shack: two Uniden BCD996T's, Icom R8500 general coverage receiver and a AOR DV1 digital receiver and a Uniden BCD436HP scanner that receives pro-voice. As you can see, I like to stay well informed of what is happening.
I now have Winlink Gateway up and running on 145.070 KD4MC-10 I have a micro node that serves as an IRLP node 8642 and an Echolink node 496650 (KD4MC-L) 446.875 simplex pl 100.0
I am primarily on digital hf. I am usually on the digital portions of 20 meters. When I am home, I can be found on 147.270+, any of the Carolina 440 group repeaters, 224.160- pl 91.5 or on the DMR system.
In my vehicle I have a Yaesu FT-8800 VHF/UHF radio,a Connect Systems CS-800 for DMR and a Kenwood TM-D710 for APRS(KD4MC-7).
I have been retired on disability since June 30, 2009. This was not by any choice of mine. I would have rather worked another 10 or 12 years. I spend my days at home with my wife, Veld(K4VJC),our little hairy hound, a purebred Pomeranian named Remmington and our cat Tabitha.
When I am mobile, I am usually on 147.270+ or on any one of the Carolina 440 UHF repeaters, 146.52 simplex or on DMR.
