I've been a ham operator for only a few years but only recently have started to jump in. My main objective is to use my skills for emergency communications, secondly pleasure. Friends of mine suck me in about 6 years ago with CERT Training and a repeater set up at our church for that purpose. I've used the rigs that I have to make contacts locally and have found a great group of people on the other end.

I'm an operator with a variety of radios to work from. My HT is an Yeasu FT 60 that fits both my hand and needs for local use. In my mobile Is my ICOM 5100 with D Star capabilities. As a radio at home I'm set up, but not running, a Kenwood 741A. Not running due to the fact that the room for my shack is occupied with my grandsons, temporary housing. All of these rigs I thoroughly enjoy, my only problem is my location. I'm in the bottom of a bowl and have great difficulties transmitting anywhere. The ICOM is giving me my 'out' since I'll be setting up the D Star section in a short while.

Now this is my purpose and equipment, but who am I? I'm a 60 year old skilled tradesman with General Motors, 31 years. I started my journey outside of GM as an apprentice Gauge Maker. After working for 10 years and a rescession, I applied to GM and been there since. This is not the only facet to my life. I've been an active Chaplan for the past 15 years, and also the President of a crisis response group of 70 or so members. The crisis group is affiliated with the county support services as well as Homeland Security. In the event of a disaster I can be activated in one of 3 ways, Oakland County ARPSC, Oakland County Crisis Response Orginisation, or CERT. As a Chaplain I can offer support to workers as well as victims of disaster. Most every day some aspect of my traingins and faith come into play with just normal situations. As a Chaplain I can perform Marriage cerimonies, buriels and a host of other services.

After I retire, in a few years, I plan on getting more involved in Amatuer Radio as an outlet for myself, just to be me. Until then I'll enjoy all of the people that  meet on the airwaves.
