Ham Member Lookups: 823

Over 30 years ago, I encountered my first ham. On April 10, 1979, in Wichita Falls, TX, an F4 tornado killed 42 people, decimated nearly 5000 homes, and knocked out power, water, and telephone to a large part of the town for over a week. Anxious families from around the world wondered about their relatives. A good friend of mine, Don Hoffman, WA9TOT, fired up his shack on generator power and for about a week, he took inquiries and we would check the status of family and friends, mostly by bicycle. With the support of willing hams on the airways around the world, we would relay messages back and forth from the disaster area and Don would pass them along. From that moment on, I knew I needed to be a ham. It just took me a while to get my license.

My Air Force career took me around the world for the next 27+ years. When I finally moved to Las Vegas and retired, I figured it was time to realize my goal. I'm trying to make up for lost time by learning to work 2m and 440MHz as well as figure out D-STAR, DMR, and packet. I've also recently joined the local ARES/RACES group and the Las Vegas Radio Amateur Club. Working an Icom IC-92AD, Connect Systems 750, and a Kenwood TH-D72A handheld as well as a Yaesu FT-7900 and Icom ID-880H mobiles, I'm working hard to be a part of the local ham community.  I have recently ventured into the HF world with an Icom IC-7100. While HOA restrictions keep me from any sizeable HF antenna, I'm doing my best with a vertical on a swivel mount. I'm out to learn a lot more and make this my main hobby. I have been using Echolink and APRS for a while and am beginning to expand into packet - always room to learn more! Hope to hear you out there.
