Was playing around with a crude HF radio in my modular synthesizer one night thinking, "I wonder what all those muffled voices are saying" (http://www.evatontechnologies.com/rf-nomad).  Googled down the amatuer radio rabbit-hole and got my Tech & General a few months later.  Still hacking my way through, but intend to pass Extra whenever I find more time to study.

Putting more mileage on a CHA-250B in Los Angeles than its' critics may suspect. 5/9s as far as Portugal, Japan and the Caribbean; with solid digital contacts in Russia, Japan, South America, the Caribbean and a tiny whale research drone in the Hawaiian Pacific.

Also a D-STAR fan.  Some HF purists call it cheating, but I think hopping your voice around the world between 2M / 70cm repeaters and the Internet is cool; if not useful in emergencies without phone and local ISP service.

My HF rig is a Yaesu FT-450D transceiver, CHA-250B antenna, various dynamic mics and preamps.  For digital I use a Mac Pro (late 2013), fldigi, wsjt-x and an RME Fireface UFX audio interface with my HF rig.  Operating an Icom ID-51A Plus 2 with either an Arrow 146 / 137-10 satellite antenna or Diamond SRH77CA whip in FM and D-STAR on 2M / 70cm.
