Hi I'm Joe,

Thanks for coming by.

I got started in amateur radio in 2016. Honestly, I should have gotten into this in college, but having to learn morse code and study for a license while going to school, the timing was not right. But it's never too late and I was prompted by my friend Dave W6DWA to get a license, and here I am.

I started out with a 10W radio and now also use a 100W radio, but most of the time I will use the little 10W radio, because I enjoy low power, and the mobility it offers. I don't have a "shack" and I usually do radio on the kitchen table, the back yard or a park. The 10W radio is usually powered by a 1500mA LiFePO4 battery. The two radios I use are both SDR designs and I am very impressed with the performance of both, but my primary interest is in antennas.

I started out with a 1/2 wave wire antenna, then moved up to a dipole, next a full wave loop, a magnetic loop, a couple of two element wire yagis, and finally the Moxon series. Every step has been an inprovement. It took about four iterations of the 20m Moxon before I got a really efficient antenna at the installed height of 28ft/8.5m on a fiberglass mast. Nothing here is ideal, I live in the middle of a big city with a lot of RF noise from the neighborhood. I am located at 35ft above sea level elevation at the South end of San Francisco bay in San Jose. I also have a metal light pole with an LED lamp about 50 ft from my antenna. It's a challenging environment.

So far Moxon is the best antenna I have used, because I have not had the opportunity to try anything else. Maybe someone will let me plug my little 10W radio into their SteppIR on a 100ft tower, and let me reset my antenna expectations.

Thanks for visiting.

Joe
