James T Hadfield, AKA "TED", born 1943. in Seward. Alaska, raised in Village of Naknek, where my parents owned an operated a hotel, restaurant and bar. The Hotel and Restaurant has been sold but the bar is still owned by a sister and brother. Anchor pictured above is a true "old boat anchor" from an old ship that burned and sank in the area in the 1920's or so. It was owned by a salmon cannery, and towed by a tug boat to transport canned salmon back to the west coast. It was originally the Downeaster sailing vessel Charles E. Moody built circa 1882 on East Coast USA in Bath, Maine.A young teenager, thats ME in 1962. the anchor was recovered by Crawley Maritime when their vessel anchor was being retrieved it tangled with this one.It was then brought in and displayed in front of my parents hotel and bar in Naknek where the crew was staying. Here is a photo of the ship at port in Seattle, with the same original anchor (circa 1920s)

D&D Restaurant and Hotel, east entrance, As it Looks today (on right) .On the left, the old north entrance, in the late 40's and early 50"s when I was growing up.A long wire antenna is on the roof top for sw reception. I remember playing with vintage radios and remember a Zenith Transoceanic all band radio, where we could tune in the whole outside WORLD!!

My mother was a cw operator at the end of WWII, and was a remote weather reporter right after WWII in Lake Clark, Alaska, and sent cloud ceiling (for mountain passes for small aircraft) information to the C.A.A. Civilian and Military corps in Anchorage via morse code. Moved to Naknek around 1950, My dad was a bartender, adifficult occupation to raise a family, but our parents were very good to us.  During Jr and Sr years in High School I boarded at a Childrens Home in Wasilla because our village had no schooling beyond the 8th grade, the Childrens home happened to be run by Bible believing Christians, and I was told about Jesus birth, life, death and ressurrection, (John 3:16) although I was a tough case, I made a belief commitment to him, that began a life changing experience. I am a high school grad, Wasilla, Ak '63. college, Anchorage AMU/UAA/ACC College in '64 and '65.I also experienced first hand and"rode out" the great Alaska Earthquake in Anchorage Alaska, (in 1964,, we had at first thought that it was an atomic bomb, the shock was so great) during the confusion immediately after the quake, all power was out, no communications except for one of the local radio stations that had emergency power and was transmitting information , (I was staying with a family; some missionary friends from N. Ireland) we found a small transistor radio in the rubble pile of furniture and belongings in their living room, battery operated, it had a broken antenna, so I fashioned a small makeshift antenna from some aluminum foil and we were able to better listen to the emergency broadcasts which included directions and announcements for how to get messages out to families, where to go to purchase supplies and food, most of their own food and supplies were in a messy mix on the kitchen floor with cupboard and refridgerator contents. we were told what to expect for a few days, it was a real relief. The following year I went to Bible School in Chicago and met my future wife in September of 1964. & Married Nancy Warner in Coldwater, Michigan Oct of 1965. Drafted US Army Dec '65,served in W Germany since my brother had been sent earlier to Vietnam, reenlisted for another tour in Germany, until '71. Highlite of my tour was a train trip in 1966, long before reunification, through W. Germany to East Germany and on to Berlin, visited checkpoint charlie and the wall. After military service returned to Anchorage AK from '71 to '89.During that time I used my GI bill, to study electronics, and computer programming I was employed as a loan officer and branch manager for an FAA and an Alaska Railroad Credit Union, then the branch manager of Atlantic Richfield Federal Credit Union Anchorage, I got interested in Ham Radio, acquired my license as KL7JCR as novice and general, then Advanced KL7CH until 1984.Experienced "Aurora"signals off the overhead Northern Lights, very odd audio "whisper" reception. Also worked from a Prudhoe Bay Oil Company's Ham station. XYL's health required Move to Michigan '89. I had Allowed license to lapse. (keep up the license!!!) I reaquired license (KD8MTO) by taking Technician Class Test in Dec 2009, then grandfathered back to General Class. Acquired new vanity callsign K7CHL dislexic KL7CH. and just now upgraded extra class to KU8F. My main shack rig here is a Yaesu FT450D , antenna is a homemade 40m quad loop. and also two random long wires approx 65 feet long each and 30 feet high, to the S.W, works well with tuner for 10 thru 160. Nancy and I have 5 Children and 8 grandchildren. I admnister and schedule the  40M (7.185 mhz) Northamerican Traffic and Awards Net at 7:00 pm eastern, daily.  (see www.natanet.info/live), and also help co-control the Saturday OMISS net on 10 meters,SSB, (6 other bands as well for OMISS), see www.OMISS.net. Great bunch of Hams.   I have worked 5 bands all States, and DXCC. . I also Own and operate a computer repair shop in Coldwater Michigan. See www.hadfieldservices.com  UPDATE: I had returned portable to Naknek, Alaska which divided two boroughs of Alaska (Alaska has boroughs instead of counties) Bristol Bay Borough and Lake and Peninsula Borough, from Aug 16 to Aug 26 2013. Stations worked were sent qsl cards postmarked from Naknek Alaska 99633. credit for both boroughs. Am now back home in my regular QTH, Coldwater Michigan.
