I became interested in radio and electronics at a young age, and discovered amateur radio by picking up a topband morse practice station on a shortwave set. I passed the RAE at university, but difficulties learning to read CW were a barrier to gaining an HF licence and the hobby lapsed. That was until my son discovered amateur radio for himself at a Scouting event and we both became licensed. I'm still practising CW to follow QSLs on 40m, and had my first faltering on-air QSO in June 2017.

I have designed and built a small loop antenna (about 1.2m diameter) for use on 40m, which is good for reception and ok for transmission (at about 5% efficiency, so will always sound QRP), and presented on its construction and theory at a meeting of the Dorking and District Radio Society in 2017. I also designed and maintain that society's website: www.ddrs.org.uk
