First got interested in Shortwave Radio, via my grandad when I was about 5/6.
Built various Tandy/Science Fair kits over the years (still have them, haven't tried any for a while though) - my grandad loaned me his Codar CR-70, when I was about 8, and we hooked it to a longwire, and I spent many years listening to BCB and Amateurs/Marine/utilities.
I scrimped and saved for a Panasonic RF-B45 on my 17th birthday - this became my main RX for a few years, until I accquired a Kenwood R-2000 (+VHF)
My grandad had dabbled in data modes of various descriptions, on HF and VHF - this got me intrigued too - I remember one afternoon, using a Colour Genie, Kantronics KAM, and a R600 I think and we received some amateur RTTY - that got me hooked..I got hold of a Hamcomm Modem not long after I got the B45, and started by receiving WEFAX - and later RTTY, of which I enjoyed Press RTTY mainly - I used to receive TANJUG and MAP - Unfortunately TASS left the air not long before I got into data! - I tried HF Packet, FEC, Navtex, and AMTOR/SITOR as well.
Wind forward a few years - I got involved with my local Amateur Radio Club at Wrexham, 12 months later I was 2W1MDH, and also on the committee!..I took the Full a year later, passing that after only 8 weeks! - I'd also taken the Foundation alongside, to give me HF access..I became MW1MDH in early 2002.
I tend to do a lot of SWLing - Mainly as its what brought me into the hobby, so I still listen to a lot of BCB and utility - but data is my main thing - If I'm not TX-ing it, I'm RX-ing it! - WXSAT, SYNOP, etc - I have been playing almost exclusively for the last 18 months on WSPR and JT65.
I do use voice, but I'm on every now and then - I do contest, and make an effort to enter most of the bigger HF contests, CQWW, CQWPX, IOTA, ARRL DX and so on - I've done pretty well in most of them.
Current setup is an Icom IC-7600 (V2.0 f/w) into a Hustler 5BTV (with earthmat) and a MFJ 962D Tuner (the 80M on the 5BTV is narrow!) with a Heil Proset iC.
Portable setup: Icom ID-51E which I also run into a DV Mega for D-Star Access at home - I also use an FT-817 and a Kenwood D7E as well when portable!
RX Side is catered for by an Icom R-75, which whilst running on an internal longwire, still gets a fair amount of use for utilities - I also run a Bonito RadioJet, and an Icom R-1500 which looks after the airband RX/ACARS side of things!
Since being licenced - I remained at Wrexham for about 10 years, in that time, I ran the website, looked after the press side of things, was Vice-Chair and eventually Chairman - I am the webmaster for the UKFM Group (Western) and have been the RSGB Regional Manager for Region 6 (North Wales) and am currently the DRM (Deputy Regional Manager) for Wrexham, Chirk and Powys.
