My current station with my New Yaesu FT-991

My 1965 Shelby AC Cobra

I have been a ham since 1975. First licensed as WD0BHU as Novice and Tech. N0HKK after upgrade to General Class. As you can see, cars are also one of my great passions.

I am a retired teacher/professor. For years, I ran the Oakville Sr. High Ham Radio Club where I was able to get a small number of students licensed as Hams.

The station here is very simple these days. I retired my Kenwood TS-140S on Oct. 30, 2015 and added my new Yeasu FT-991 feeding an MFJ-993B auto tuner into an Alpha Delta DX-EE multiband dipole up about 35 ft. I run barefoot with 100 watts or less. I also have a longwire fed with a 9:1 unun at 84' in length as well as a verticle with 31' using an MFJ push up pole and a 9:1 unun (single 31 ft radial and it works great on all bands. In addition, I am using Ham Radio Deluxe for PSK. Digital HF is very new to me, but it is a lot of fun. Lots of DX to be found there. I am also enjoying D-Star and Fusion Digital VHF and UHF. I recently added DMR and an Open Spot to my shack and am having a lot of fun with that. Trying to get the open Spot set up to run mobile from a very small portable Wi-Fi router.

It took a full year to set up my HF station in the car. All kinds of weird stuff kept happening with the station until I accidently discovered that the Radio Shack 3/8-24 mount was defective and shorting the antenna to ground. Changed the mount and everything works as it should. It is an Icom 706 MarkII G to an Icom IC-AH4 autotuner fed into a 102" whip. For two years, I have not been able to operate 15 or 12 meters in the car as it would shut the car down. After some significant study of Baluns, Ununs, Chokes/isolators, etc., I decided that the mobile antenna being an end fed antenna needed an isolator to prevent the signal from radiating throughout the car and feedlines. I put an MFJ-915 RF isolator in the line and now I have no problem operating on 15 or 12.

Member of the Jefferson County Ham Radio Club and The Ancient Modulators Club.

Just starting to work the digital modes. D-Star and Fusion.

I have run for United States Congress in Missouri twice.
