I was first hooked on electronics and radio at age 10 when a neighbor gave me an old Atwater-Kent 14 tube receiver chassis.  To my dad’s amazement, I got the radio running with the help of a professor of Electrical Engineering at Iowa State University (College at the time).  Dad supported my need to tinker by suggesting to Santa Claus to give me a Knight Kit 12 in 1 project kit, followed by a Knight Kit Star-Roamer shortwave radio kit the following year.  My first “on the air” experience was with a Knight Kit Radio Broadcaster, an AM 100 mw FCC part 15 transmitter.

By the time I was ready to buckle down to take the FCC exam, I had moved on to airplane pilot lessons and got my Private Pilot ticket at age 16.

College (Chemical Engineering) and getting married continued to divert my attention away from ham radio, until I ran out of money for airplanes and needed a less expensive hobby!  Got my novice in 1978 (WD0HQB) and upgraded to General/Advanced with the call, N5LPZ.  Jumped in and changed to a vanity call when N0MPM became available.

I have dabbled in many of the facets of ham radio, including early packet radio, SSTV, QRP, satellite, and HF Dx’ing and contesting.  Spent many years involved with ARES including a 7 year stint as the Colorado Section Emergency Coordinator.

After 37 years as a Kenwood guy, I am now running an Elecraft K3S line with a K2 for my backup rig and a KX3 for my “in the field” rig.  SSB is my go to mode, but I do enjoy CW if below 15wpm!

For the last 15+ years I have been supporting STEM education through Amateur Radio High Altitude Ballooning (ARHAB).  Learned from the best via Edge of Space Science group while living in Denver, and now flying various experiments designed and built by local high school students.

Been licensed for almost 40 years and still having fun!!
