HAM BIO OF WNØAUM,  WBØAUM,  KQØC,  NØND  2017

My earliest radio memories start with going with my Dad to the NP Depot in Dickinson, ND..... there was a space in the depot called the Midget Newstand and they had lots of magazines.  While Dad was at the depot checking the "board" in the road office, I often stayed to look at the magazines.....they had one called S9  which was a CB mag.   I used to look at them and even buy one every once if a while if I could get Dad to spring .

While it said in the S9 that CB wattage was 10 watts.... then I read something about Amateur radio....and found it could be much higher in output.  I read all I could get my hands on.

One day my Mom heard on KDIX  (the local AM) that a meeting was to be at Mark Tollefson's for the ham radio club.  She heard this on the "Swap Shop"  a radio program sponsored by Schilla's Hardware.  ( I would later work at KDIX -TV as a sign off newscaster and cameraman for the evening news)

Well,  I went to the club meeting,  I think I was about the eigth grade and the others were in their mid 40's or late 30's.  But I stayed and listened and got some information.  Mark , WØZCM,  Clarence,  WØRTK,  Larry WØIRY, Ray WAØREW,  Fr. Ray , KØTYY,  Alex , WØZTL,  Charlie, WØBHF  were the guys.

They lent me a old army paper tape code machine,  I learned morse code the wrong way.  Converted the sound to dots and dashes and then to letters.

For Christmas , one year my folks got me a Sears tuneable CB,  It was a small box with a morse code key on the side and a tuner knob and could get out of the CB band.  I heard HCJB in Quito Equador.  Pretty Neet.

I finally took the novice test and passed.  Mark showed me a Electronics Illustrated  magazine with a CW transmitter.  It had a 50C5 tube and coils for 80, 40 and 15 meters.  I built it on a sheet of plexiglass.  I got a couple of crystals.  Wow, I ordered a Heathkit and got it......it was a HR10B receiver.  Got my call....WN0AUM

found it......www.qsl.net/wd4nka/texts/50c5f.htm   &   www.qsl.net/kb7tbt/manuals...

I built it without too much problem,  My Mom put up with me building it on the kitchen table.

Using this outfit, I made about 30 or more contacts and put some of the QSL cards on my wall.  Upgrading to Conditional , I ordered a SB102 from Heathkit.  I was lucky,  I had a couple of jobs  KDIX and late PM delivery of the Bismarck Tribune after school.  Dad matched my $ .  Upgraded to WBØAUM, Got a secondary call for my Dads work location in Glendive,  WB7CSB.  Used to get on in the late pm with a bunch of young guys in the 300 mile area...We called ourselves the "Midnight Cowboys"  Nate,  WBØCMT,  Doug , WB0CUV,  Jim WAØFEU,  Tiny WBØBIN,  and others.

I had some trouble with the SB102 and went out to Sentinal Butte,  to Father Ray,  KØTYY and he worked on it.  He had company. …. The grandson of the Marquis de More was visiting from France.  We sampled some of Fr. Rays' homemade wine,  Lilac, Chokecherry and others and I heard lots of stories.

Used the Heath to talk to the locals at noon pretty much all of High School.  Went to NDSU and they had a college ham radio station ..Cool  Club Call.....WØHSC  .   Met there,   Scott.,  WBØMLU,  Jim Hetland KØQQB, now  WØJRH  who was chief engineer of KDSU, Ernie WØRRV who was WØHSC Trustee and Elec Engineering Prof.

Graduated from NDSU and went to work for NW Bell in Rapid City,  Where I met Al,  WØPUF,  Gary WØCX,  Arne, KØAS,  Jeff  KØHF,  Don AAØF and others in 1979.  We always met at East North Street for coffee on Sat. Member of the Black Hills Amateur Radio Club. Black Hills Amateur Radio Club…..met at Robbins and Stearns Lumber basement….meeting after the meeting ….Brass Rail……Club Call….WØBLK

Moved to Bismarck,  NW Bell,  Member of BARK…..later to become CDARC…Noteable members .Mike,  WBØTEE and Bob  , WBØUOR (NØBXT,NØTC)  Meetings at the Town House….Then adjourned to the Crows Next at the Colonial….Club Call  WØZRT

In 2011/ 10/30 used my rock polisher to pour about 3 yards of concrete, for Rohn 25, will have MP-33 Mosley up in time for phone sweeps in 2011. Planning for 30' this year, next year to be determined.. ...DONE..the MP-33 was $87.00 in 1964.... still kikin.... am probably the 2-3 owner.

Slope County, North Dakota
Population:713

Slope County, which is located in the State of North Dakota, ranks as number 15 for the most sparcely populated counties in the United States.

Slope County is in far southwestern North Dakota on the border with Montana and near South Dakota The landscape varies between huge tracts of grassland with some "Badland" type countryside in the western part of the county.

Only 713 people live in an area larger than the State of Rhode Island. The county seat, Amidon, is the smallest county seat in the U.S. with only 13 people. Even though a county seat, Amidon is so small that Rand McNally does not index it in their Road Atlas.
