The station is at an elevation of 5090 ft (1551 m) near the town of Berthoud, Colorado. The photo is looking west to Long's Peak, 26 miles (42 km) away in Rocky Mountain National Park, at an elevation of 14255 ft (4342 m).

About Me:

I'm an electrical engineer, retired from the data storage industry (disc drives, tape drives).

I enjoy casual DX and conversations from 160 m up. I also do many outdoor activities, hold a private pilot certificate and flew mostly Cessna 172 and 182.

Originally licensed around 1973 as WN0IDP and worked QRP CW on 40m with a 1-watt transmitter circuit board kit and a Heathkit GR-54 general coverage receiver that I built for short-wave listening. Then school, career, and family intervened.

I became active again in 1992 as N0TZU after passing Tech, General and Advanced written tests in one session, but passed only 5 WPM code so had to settle for Technician "Plus".  Achieved 13 WPM some months later and upgraded to Advanced. Finally got around to upgrading to Extra in 2012.

Station Details:

HF transceivers are an Elecraft K3-100, Heathkit SB-102, Icom 751A.

The primary HF antenna is a non-resonant wire vertical 39 ft (12 m) high with 20 radials and a remote tuner MFJ-993BRT. It has remotely switched loading coils for 80m and 160m.

Some Random Photos:

The obligatory photo of my shack, cleaned up just for the occasion.

Working on a club repeater and its antennas on the fire station roof courtesy of a Longmont Fire Dept. ladder truck. The repeater was recently moved to another location mosty because of intractable intermittent intermod issues in the area.

Public sculpture and art is popular in Berthoud and nearby Loveland which has a large sculpture park, annual sculpture show and several foundries. Most utility boxes in Loveland are decorated by local artists. Vandalism is rare.

One of the runs I challenge myself with at a small local ski area. It's a double black diamond EX - not very long, but I'm not 18 anymore either.

My all-mountain "ham radio" skis, and a selfie on the slopes

Waiting my turn for a water crossing on a popular 4x4 trail in one of the nearby National Forests.

Swimming with whale sharks passing by while feeding on plankton. They are the length of a school bus. Snorkeling only - scuba gear not allowed.
