Ham Member Lookups: 1254

Thank you for visiting my page on QRZ.  I am an Extra Class operator living in suburban Chicago.

My operating focus is QRP CW, although I enjoy operating HF Phone from my Jeep Wrangler when I am out and about.

There is very little information on how to install ham radio equipment in Jeep Wranglers, especially HF installs.  I wrote a series called Outfitting a Jeep Unlimited for Ham Radio to help others through the process.  The series covers everything from electrically bonding the vehicle to improving antenna performance to snaking cable through the rear cargo door.

NVIS Communication

Since we take the Jeep when we camp, hike, or kayak, I've also experimented with NVIS communication.  I wrote The Complete Amateur's Guide to NVIS Communication as an introduction to this propagation technique.  Hopefully, you will find it useful in a variety of applications.

Radio Scouting

One way I promote amateur radio is by introducing the hobby to Boy Scouts. When our unit camps, I bring my “Scout Portable” QRP radio station and operate during the evening. The boys have the opportunity to talk on the radio and enjoy the excitement of speaking with people all over the world.

I am the Trustee of K9RSR, the ham radio station at Rainbow Scout Reservation.

If you are a ham and a Scouter in Will, DuPage, Grundy, or Kankakee Counties in Illinois, we could use a few merit badge counselors or instructors for the Technician Class license. Please send me an email to the address listed on this site, or visit n4ae.com.

Watering Holes

When I operate portable, I monitor the following nets.  Give me a call!

  • MIDCARS on 7258 kHz
  • HFPACK on 14.3425 MHz (Day), 18.1575 MHz (Day), or 3996 kHz (Night)

When we camp, I use an NVIS antenna.  Call me on 3996 kHz or 5371.5 kHz.

VY 73,

Brian
