Shown in the picture taken during  the  FEB 2018 SCR is Anna Matson KN4IVD with her Brother and Father behind her while she calls CQ CQ and gives out DE N4SMS 59 we are a School  in SC.

N4SMS is the club call of Schofield Middle School Radio Club in Aiken, SC. Club equipment was made possible through a grant from Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS). The club got its' start through the efforts of Schofields' then Guidance Counselor, Mr. John Felak. The club is sponsored by the North Augusta Belvedere Radio Club (K4NAB). A complete selection of books was purchased from ARRL and donated to the school Media Center for checkout by future HAMS.

Club meetings are held on Thursdays from 3:10 - 4:30 PM. The students are exposed to amateur radio through Echolink contacts, local 2 Meter QSOs and through HF whereever the band propagation takes us.  Phoenetic alphabet and Morse code are also being taught. Current Elmers for the club are  Brian Robertson AA4UJ, Jim Harris KG4ZNN, David Kjelquist WB5NHL, Mike Newland NC8N and Kent Hufford KQ4KK. The club advisor is Mr. Tray Nelson.  KK4FCI.  We use QRZ Logbook, EQSL and LOTW.  For paper QSL please SASE  to the school. Thanks and 73s. The students are very excited when their individual QSL cards show up.

Many great things have happened at N4SMS since my last update.  The kids placed first in the nation during the February 2017 School Club Roundup and third overall in the October 2017 SCR.  We started the 2018 school year with 12  students in the club.  Recently four of our students passed the Technician level FCC licensing test.  Two young men and two YLs.  They are Anna Matson KN4IVD, Andrew Guerry KN4IVA, Lance Rolka KN4IWB and Piper Woodwarde KN4IWC.  We Elmers are very proud of them.

We get a lot of publicity about club events in the Aiken Standard newspaper and this has resulted in several gifts of equipment from the HAM community and their XYLs.  These gifts have been used to create the funding for an ICOM 7300 radio which the kids used during the last SCR.  Future plans include fox hunts and satellite contacts in the coming weeks.  Today we had a QSL party with the kids filling out and addressing return QSL cards.
