First licensed in 1976 as WN5USV later, WB5USV, W5USV, N5UV and finally N5MV. My uncle Warren Anderson introduced me to Amateur Radio at the end of WW2. He was a Radioman 1st Class in the Navy serving in Atlantic convoy duty and then on to the Pacific. He maintained a amateur radio station behind our home in Houston. The access to the radio station was above the garage via a trap door. I spent some time with him watching operations from his lap as a three - four year old. His ability working code was fascinating and the dials, lights and meters caught my interest. Later in life I joined the Coast Guard and was stationed on Marcus Island 1963, for a 1 year, 1month, 13 days 8 1/2 hrs. The island is now known as HamCall prefix JD1. We commissioned as a manned Coast Guard Loran C and Communication Station under the Department of Defense. We had ham station as part of our recreation gear however though interested I did not pursue a license until years later and through a friend Don, K5AAD who encouraged me to obtain a license.

I currently hold six FCC licenses, General Radiotelephone,Marine Radiotelegraph, GMDSS Operator, GMDSS Maintainer, Ship Radar Endorsement and Amateur Extra Class. My passion is DX, collecting tube radios, which affectionally known as "Boat Anchors" due to their weight. Its a nice collection of Collins, Central Electronics,Hammarlund, Hallicrafters, Johnson, Drake, National, TMC both transmitters and receivers. I enjoy operating CQWW and ARRL DX Contests; it's more than a rite of passage. My goal is to finally work North Korea which seems to be a "Bridge to Far". The excitement of working a new country or the fascination of the majic of radio communication continues to be interesting. My DX work is about 50% SSB and CW.
