I have been interested in electronics since the 5th grade, after graduating high school worked as a commercial and residential electrictian for 5 years, the housing industry took a nose dive, worked in a warehouse for 2 yrs, then entered into law enforcement for 17 years until retirement. Have always been involved with public service and communications in one way or another via Civil Air Patrol, Hamilton County-Butler COunty and Warren County Emergency Management Agencies, Hamilton County Task Group, Tri-State Search And Rescue and finally amateur radio. In search and rescue we used APRS on commercial frequencies to track search teams and K-9's while they were deployed in the field, utilizing the messaging system for updates and status reporting to and from the field base camp.

I joined ARES in 2000 as providing emergency communications was one of my big interest in amateur radio first being deployed by Red Cross in 2001 to the World Trade Center and provided communications to emergency shelters and the Red Cross operation for 5 days while helping to prepare a more permanent HQ for the Red Cross operations in Brooklyn, NY.

In 2005 I was on a team of 4 operators that were first deployed to Montgomery, Alabama then assigned to the Hancock Co elementry school shelter for 7 days. While stationed there we were able to digipeat the New Orleans W5UK APRS station to a working node in Hattiesburg to help dump the backed up messages from the New Orleans site. We worked to get the shelters phone system working, fax machine working, helped to secure the doors on the building damaged from the storm, then were re-assigned by Montgomery to Biloxi at Red Cross HQ located at the Shrine Center where we finished out our 21 day deployment.

I enjoy building things and making things work. So far I have built or rebuilt several repeaters (12) and Air Mail nodes (4) that can also be used to digipeat through. Worked to make our tower sites safer from mother nature by adding upper support arms for the antennas to limit the amount of wind damage, cell site type grounding of the feed lines at multiple points plus utilizing commecial grade Polyphaser surge protection etc. Installed Ultima deep cycle batteries and maintenance chargers at our sites that do not have emergency generators, that were tested during IKE that took out commercial power for 5 days-to which all of our equipment remained on the air the entire time while operators assisted the county officials.

I am also a member of the Butler County VHF Association W8CCI and have been working with them to upgrade their communications center that is shared via an MOU with the ARES group to provide emergency communications for Butler County.

One of my own projects is to rebuild another mobile communications trailer with updated gear and dispatcher style consoles that can handle multiple radio systems at the same time with cross patch capabilities including adding agency portable radios into my control system for communications with them on their own trunked radio systems..
