I received my novice license in 1975 as WN9QVN. My first rig was a Heathkit DX-40, and I was "rock bound" by regulation.  At some point the FCC eased the rule and I was able to borrow a VFO and move around the 80, 40, and 15m bands; 20m was off limits to us.   The novice license was CW only, no SSB, and I used a straight key like so many others.  My receiver was an old National NC-183D, which worked pretty well on the lower bands.  At some point the FCC changed my call to WB9QVN before it expired.

I was off the air until about 1982 when I got my General license and became N5FIW while living in Houston Texas.  We moved back to Illinois in 1983 and I kept that call.  I operated sporadically until 2015, but since then have been pretty active.  I upgraded to Extra in April of 2015, and received N9LQ in November of 2015.  I have enjoyed contesting, dxing, digital modes, and playing a bit with satellite SO-50.  I belong to the Schaumburg Amateur Radio Club, the Society of Midwest Contesters, and the Northern Illinois DX Association.  These great groups have been really helpful, and are a lot of fun to be a part of.

My current rig is a Yaesu FTDX1200, and recently added an AL-1200 amplifier.  My antennas are very modest.  I have an 80/40/20 parallel dipole which works pretty well on most bands, and I have an inverted L for both 160 and 80.  For receiving on 80 and 160, I use a K9AY loop, a shielded loop, and 2 short beverages on the ground (BOGs).

I use LOTW, and EQSL.  I will also QSL direct.  Domestic, just send me your card.  International, include a SASE and sufficient green stamps for postage.

February 2016 I operated as KP2/N9LQ from St. Croix, US Virgin Islands in the UBA DX CW contest.  These contacts are on LOTW only.

Field Day 2016 I operated with the "Blazing Paddles" in the 1A category.  These contacts are not available on LOTW, but if you need a QSL card, send me a SASE

March 2017 I operated as KP2/N9LQ from St. Croix, US Virgin Islands.  These contacts are on LOTW only.
