I had been interested in ham radio off and on since I was a teenager, but finally got my license in 1994 as a result of the public service work hams did after a tornado passed near Lafayette, IN where I was living at the time.

Since then I moved to Bellevue, Nebraska and to Waterloo, Nebraska.  I became interested in APRS in 1998 and began chasing APRS-equipped high-altitude balloons launched by the Kansas Near Space Project the same year.  My experiences with that led to the formation of Nebraska Stratospheric Amateur Radio (NSTAR) in 2000.  NSTAR has conducted over 50 balloon flights since October 2000 and presently has three to five flights per year.

In addition to amateur radio high-altitude ballooning and APRS, I participate in Skywarn nets as a meteorologist (but not an NWS employee) from the nearby NWS forecast office in Valley, NE.
