One of Tony Baleno’s (N3ZN) Masterpieces Custom Made for NB7B

If you worked me on CW, I go by "GW".  You can find my blog at NB7B.COM

I was licensed in 1981 as a technician class ham with Novice privileges. At that time the Technician license had no HF privileges except on 10 meters as I recall. Since I passed the 5 WPM novice code test, and General written exam, I could operate on VHF with Technician privileges and on HF with Novice CW privileges.

I had very little interest in FM and repeaters, so I went straight for the Novice CW segments of the bands. It only took about a 6 months to get my speed up to 13 WPM to pass the General code exam, and I sat for the Advanced written exam at the same time.

Even though, I now had phone privileges on HF, I remained mostly on CW. I was really trying to get my speed up to 20 WPM for the Extra class license.Sometime in 1983 or 1984, I sat for the Extra exams and passed both.

I continued to work primarily CW and eventually got my code speed up to about 30 WPM. Fast forward through a nearly 20 year hiatus of having a station operating only sporadically and essentially making no CW contacts for about 18 years, and I find myself topping out at about 10 WPM now.

This year I set a goal to get back to 20 WPM. I’m not touching a microphone on HF. I am also dedicated to learning to use a straight keyat that speed.

As I enjoy contesting, I want to get my contest speed up to 30 WPM. Contests have such a limited exchange that this is perfectly doable. Really all you need to need to do is be able to read you own call at that speed and send 5NN (with paddles or keyboard).
