April 2015 started a new chapter as we have moved from the Maryland QTH to the new North Carolina QTH. The NC QTH is in Pamlico County which is in the far eastern part of the state. A  Google Earth view of the NC QTH which is in FM15. Gone are the tower and beams from the old QTH.

In June 2017 I retired from federal law enforcement where I was the emergency communications program manager for the Dept of Treasury. I still keep active in emergency communications, I am a credentialed COML for North Carolina. I am also a DHS SHARES Auxillary HF station.

My electronics career started in 1980 in the USAF (1980-1986) where I was assigned to the 6920th Electronic Security Group at Misawa AB Japn and also the 6943d Electronic Security Squadron at Fort Meade, MD as a 304X4. I then worked for a British company called Racal for 20 years before going into federal service.

The main rig is the FTDX5000MP with a Acom 1000 and Palstar HF-Auto, with the addition of  Icom IC-7300. The 7300 is my backup rig, digital rig, and 6M monitor rig. Mic is a now Electro-Voice RE320 which replaced a Heil PR22, but the Heil sounded just as good.

My mobile is a Icom IC-7000 with a Tarheel 75A 6-80M antenna in a 2011 Ford F-150 XLT 5.0L 360HP V8.

Mobile Setup

For just a little over 100K miles I used a Hi-Q 3/80RT on my 2011 F-150XLT on GeoTool mount. In early 2016 while driving on I-95 outside Washington DC a large sheet of ice came of a tractor trailer and sliced the cap-hat and loading coil top off, it was beyond repair. In March 2016 I replaced it with a Tarheel 75A which was a fair bit less expensive, I will see how it performs and holds up.

New antenna projects

First is a "fan" 160M/80M/40M Inverted L vertical. I had a heavily wooded section in the back yard cleared in order to install this vertical. Before the clearing it was too thick to walk through, now it is a nice open area where I hope to get grass growing.

Using a DXEngineering Radial Plate and DXE feedline current choke, radials are 32 14AWG 63' long. Feedline is DXEnginnering's DXE400. The vertical sections of the 160M and 80M section is 45' and comprised of 2 wires spaced 24" apart at the base and 36" at the top, and at the top the go opposite directions, one is the 160M element, the other is 80M. 40M is a aluminum vertical made from an old commercial 39MHz Ringo. So far performance is exceeding expectations, the Acom 1000 has no problem loading into it without a tuner. Using WSJT's WSPR mode I have performed several tests (during summer) using 10W and consistently being received in EU and OC when using the inverted L, when I switch to the full size 160M dipole I get no DX stations receiving me. And on the local rag chew Toad Harbor 160M net the inverted L equals or out performs the dipole for the most part.

The wood frame is used to keep the wires seperated for the first 10'. The copper strap connects all the vertical elements together. At the feedpoint I have a parrallel pair of Ohmite 10M Ohm, 5W, 20KV thick film resistors, this drains off static, which was very much needed.

Upper HF and 50MHz

I tried several OCF dipoles, both commercial and homebrew and became vert disaapointed in their performance so in spring 2017 I installed is a K4HEX Hex Beam with 6M. When I left Maryland I had 98 countries confirmed on 6 and I want to get DXCC to go along with my 6M WAS, WAC and VUCC (I stopped collecting endorsements at 525), this was done with 100W and a 5 element yagi. I know the Hex will not come close to the yagi.

I didn't want to go through the hassel of putting up another tower so made a 30' high mast system. It has a 15' 2" chrome moly section and a 15' 2.5" aluminum mast section. A G450 rotor is at the base on the W9IIX mount. The whole thing tilts over and the Hex Lock allows the Hex Beam to articulate as it gets close to the ground.

So far the Hex has been working very well.

Low Band Receive

I am installed a SAL-30 Shared Apex Loop during the winter of 2017. It is elevated about 7' to clear the tractors, deers and bears! The grass has grown back underneath. I converted my SAL-30 to a Mark II, although with a bit thicker mast. The bottom section is 2.5" OD with .250" wall, tapers to a 1.75" OD that has a 1.5" solid fiberglass rod for an insulator. The top 4 sections are 1.5" OD. Other than that it is identical to the AS mast.

Finally got some atmospheric noise to see how well the SAL-30 does with that on 160M.


SAL30 performance testing using WSPR

The setup is 2 different receivers, FTDX5000MP on the SAL30 and the IC-7300 on the other antennas. Each hooked up to their own PC running WSJT-X in WSPR mode simultaneously for a direct side by side comparison.

This is a WSPR comparison on 80M over a 30 minute period after grayline. The SAL30 enjoys at least 12dN SNR improvement.
