NC6MC is the call sign assigned to the Mendocino County Amateur Radio Communications Service or McARCS. This Northern California club is comprised of ham radio operators interested in providing public service and emergency or disaster communications within Mendocino County. We are not a general purpose club but are dedicated to public service. Still we do have several fun or educational activities during the year.

With regard to emergency or disaster communications we are sort of a cross between the ARRL Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES), the California Auxiliary Communications Service (ACS) and the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES). Unlike ARES, ACS, or RACES, our leadership is elected yearly by our members and not appointed. Our main monthly meeting location is in Ukiah at the sheriff’s training center but we do meet at other locations occasionally in this wide spread, thinly populated, rural and rugged county.

We do operate in close cooperation with the American Red Cross and the various public safety agencies within the county but also provide communications to various charitable fund raising activities and other pubic benefit activities such as parades, etc. More information can be found on our web site, http://mcarcs.org.

You may hear our call sign during various activities such as Field Day or contests but our main use of this call sign will be when we are operating from one of several net control locations. Our primary operational net control location is the communications room immediately adjacent to the county Emergency Operations Center (EOC) at the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) but we may also be operating from the headquarters of the Public Health Department within the county Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) or from the Mendocino County Office of Education (MCOE). We do conduct several drill activities during the year for these agencies as well as conduct a set of local and county-wide nets weekly.

During public service activities, the net control station may be using this call sign from a portable location. We primarily operate on 2m but many have UHF capabilities as well and we can relay communications out of the immediate area via HF and also via hill top stations that can communicate with many of the remote areas of the county.

Many of our members are cross trained in other areas such as Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT), Search and Rescue, and are also Red Cross volunteers. Many of our members are sworn California Disaster Service Workers. In this way we can provide communications services to a wide variety of activities.

Thank you for supporting public service and disaster or emergency communications in your area.
