Battleship Iowa Amateur Radio Association

(BIARA)

The Battleship Iowa Amateur Radio Association (BIARA) is an association of active Pacific Battleship Center crew members who are also licensed amateur radio operators. Our purpose is the support of radio activities on, or associated with, the Battleship Iowa BB-61. The operation of the Battleship Iowa is under the control of the Pacific Battleship Center (PBC), a 501(C)3 California corporation. BIARA is a 501(c)7 California domestic nonprofit corporation operating under a MOU with the PBC.

BIARA will act as the representative of the Battleship Iowa and the Pacific Battleship Center within the amateur radio community. In this role, BIARA shall promote the Battleship Iowa and the Pacific Battleship Center (PBC), the interests and advancement of amateur radio, coordinate the activities of the associates in providing public service and provide the opportunity and facilities for the gathering and others interested in the hobby.

Listen for our NI6BB HF-only operations from the message center on the main deck mid ships. Based on operations to date with 100-watt transceivers we are generally heard very well. On the other hand, recognize that we are basically running vertically polarized antennas with broadbanded matching networks in a noisy waterfront environment and may be challenged in pulling your signals out. The "Gray Radio Gang" and BIARA are a joint effort working to restore the ship's circa 1980's radio systems to operation.  Bear in mind that  when this vintage military gear is ready to resume service that it's operations will require a team of trained personnel  to safely operate. As such we envision it's service will be limited to VERY special events and only when we have adequate team members safely trained and  coordinated. Please bear with us as we want to offer the Iowa to all! NI6BB is usually on a few days every week with SSB / J3E and or CW / A1A operations. We usually post special ops on eHam.net or QRZ.com when we are on for events of historical or military significance.

All QSL requests should be addressed to:
