First Transmitter

Above is an old yellowed page out of the ARRL 1973 Handbook. This was my first transmitter, which I built several weeks before I got my Novice ticket at age 13 - the hook-up pencil tracings still on the schematic. The first power-up revealed a cold-solder joint on the HV rectifier. The second power-up was better. I was thrilled to see the light bulb dummy-load brighten and dim with RF energy as I adjusted the output match - a vivid demonstration of resonance.

It was crystal controlled - I had two 40 meter crystals and used this transmitter rock-bound for 18 months until I saved enough pennies for a used HW100 xcvr. Best DX with the 10-watt xmtr was Hawaii, from Dayton. Thanks to the great folks at the DARA club station W8BI, who gave morse code classes and exams long ago - I think they still give classes.
