Ham Member Lookups: 2995

In the early 80's I started as a 3-meter band pirate. VHF technique was easy and interesting. Enjoying HAM radio since 1979. When I left the technical school I did a preparation for the C-exam and succeeded in 1979. I got the C-license and in febr. 1980 I got the call PE1DON. I was active on VHF and UHF with phone and AX25. When my daughter was born they broke into my car and stole all of my HAM equipment. I was not active for 12 years since 1992 but in 2005 the HAM-radio virus was re-activated again. I started with an Alinco 605E in my car. After a year the Alinco 605 was replaced by an Alinco 620E. In 2005 I bought myself a Yaesu FT897-D and I was active on HF also. In 2008 I bought a Yaesu FT8900 that replaced the Alinco in the car. The intermodulation of the FT8900 performed much better in relation to the Alinco equipment. In 2009 I bought a used Yaesu FT857D which I used in my car. The combination of Allmode and HF in the car brought me to a new dimension. I used this transceiver mainly on VHF and UHF. When I switched my employer in 2014 I decided to re-use the FT8900. Unfortunately, the FT8900 died in 2015. No output power anymore and a black spot on the PCB.  I looked for a new transceiver for VHF and UHF. I bought myself an Icom 2730E with UT133 for Bluetooth devices. I use it together with a Yaesu BH-2A Very comfortable and I have both hands free to drive the car.  The combination is ideal. No wires anymore and both hands on the steering wheel.  That is saver when I drive.

Remote controller on the dashboard of my car

The Controller for the Main Unit is installed on the dashboard of the company car

When I am on holiday I carry my FT897D with me. I prefer to find a decent place with a lot of room in "the middle of nowhere". I use the space for the HF wires and also the absence of QRM.

At the end of 2012, I bought myself an Icom 7410 that replaced the HF set at home. The Icom 7410 is the Main transceiver when I'm radioactive from my home address. The antenna I use is a home-made FT3 antenna mounted over the roof of my house and a self-made Hy-end Fed. The FT857D will be used as the VHF and UHF transceiver and is also the transceiver for D-STAR. At home I use a Raspberry-PI with the G4KLX software and a DVRPTR modem for D-Star as my personal hotspot.

For 50Mhz, 144Mhz and 430Mhz I use a Diamond V2000. I modified the V2000 with 3 radials. Read the article on my website
