Coming Home:

Hello everyone, I'm back to my QTH after these unforgettable 11 days of operation at the paradise called Fernando de Noronha. The fourth activation brought me a bit of trouble and hard work on the first two days, and then I was much rewarded for the rest of the time. The operation took place at the end of the rainy season on the island. For the first time I faced heavy rain, exactly the first two days, when the antennas were to be installed, which ended up with soaked terrain and some interruptions when the rain turned torrential. All the effort and sacrifice were worth it, since already in the first tests the antennas were perfectly adjusted and with excellent performance on all the desired bands.

After the first two days the weather got better considerably, the rain becoming increasingly scarce and the sun reigned with all its strength until the end of my stay. The propagation conditions on HF were the most unfavorable of all occasions, and the results were the most spectacular. Exactly because of the propagation predictions and with the objective of exploiting new bands, I emphasized the lower HF bands, prioritizing the CW mode at moderate speed and performing experiments on 160m, 80m and 30m.

The results were awesome; I got more than 20 countries on CW and Phone modes on 80m, hundreds of QSO CW on 30m and 40m. For the first time I got New Zealand and Japan in CW mode on 40m (New One !!). Japan on a vibrant and unforgettable QSO with a legend: Zorro Sam JH1AJT (a master on CW)!!

I’ve got to repeat the feat by getting Japan also on 30m exploring the Grayline. Many thanks to my special friend Zorro for the two memorable QSO!! These are, definitely, historical moments for my simple activation on Fernando de Noronha.

I inform you the links and i invite everyone to learn more about this wonderful work SEISA GROUP: http://www.fgc.or.jp/english/

Despite the very poor conditions of propagation I also got hundreds of QSO Phone, CW and RTTY modes on 17m, 20m, 15m and few on 12m. On 160m I was heard in Brazil, but unfortunately the colleague didn’t have a suitable antenna to perform the QSO.

Special thanks:

First of all, I would like to thank God for all my little accomplishments and telling everyone that everything that was accomplished so far has not been accomplished all by myself. From the very first moment I received the encouragement and unconditional support of my great friend and brother Paulo César Milito PT2AW, a great radio amateur and a gentleman par excellence. All the details for all the activations, whether in planning, field tests for the antennas manufactured by me, help with software and the in manufacture of the accessories used, his patience, knowledge and attention were decisive for the achieved results. I highlight the help on translating all my texts to English, as my knowledge is at a basic level.

I thank ARRL for the special attention paid to me, the release of the activation on the bulletins and the valuable validation in LoTW for all four activations. Mrs. Sharon and Mr. Joseph, I thank you very much.To my dear friends and brothers in Arms from Fernando de Noronha, I thank you for the affection and I learned with you not to say goodbye, after all my return will be very soon!! To all amateurs of the world thank you for your participation and till the next one!!

Activation May 2017:

Hello friends! Welcome to my page. This year, 2017 I will be active, for the fourth time, on the oceanic island of Fernando de Noronha with the Special Call PYØNY. The activation will be from May 05th to May, 15th and it's aim celebrate the 65th anniversary of the creation of our valuable Smoke Squadron, which is the Brazilian Air Force's Official Squadron. It is a very special date for all Brazilian citizens, mainly for all the Brazilian Air Force members, when we are celebrating this long and brilliant history of the Brazilian military aviation.

Activation detais:

On this activation I intend to give special attention to the bands of 160m and 80m, for these are bands that have been little explored and I believe they are the goal of many hams around the world. I will be also active on the other bands on phone, CW, RTTY and digital modes. The antennas will be Delta Loop, MorGain, dipoles, and some accessories all built by me on an artisan way.

Activation has already been validated by ARRL and this callsign has been accepted for DXCC credit.

Official video Smoke Squadron 2017

With the noble mission to perform air demonstrations throughout Brazil and around the world, The Smoke Squadron – A Esquadrilha da Fumaça diffuses the Brazilian Air Force – Força Aérea Brasileira (FAB) institutional image. The Air Demonstration Squadron – Esquadrão de Demonstração Aérea - EDA (official name) is located at the Air Force Academy – Academia da Força Aérea (AFA), in the city of Pirassununga, in the state of São Paulo.

Smoke Squadron Hangar

The Smoke Squadron – A Esquadrilha da Fumaça was born with the initiative of young flight instructors from the former School of Aeronautics in Rio de Janeiro, that in their spare time used to train group acrobatics aiming to show the cadets the airplanes ability and safety, giving them confidence and motivating in military piloting. On May 14th, 1952, took place the first official demonstration of the Smoke Squadron in Rio de Janeiro.

Aircrafts used:

The crew began it’s activities using the north-american aircraft NA T-6 Texan, and this model was used until the squadron deactivation on 1977. In the late 1960s, for a short period of time, it operated the french jets T-24 Super Fouga Magister. When reactivated on 1982, the Smoke Squadron – A Esquadrilha da Fumaça flew the T-25 Universal, and quite soon on 1983, it began to fly the T-27 Tucano turbo-propellers, manufactured in Brazil by EMBRAER. On March 31st, 2013, it took place the last demonstration with this aircraft, which gave place to its substitute: the Embraer A-29 Super Tucano. Like the T-27, the A-29 aircraft also received the painting in the colors of the Brazilian National Flag.

World records:

The Smoke Squadron – A Esquadrilha da Fumaça has already earned three world records - "Guinness World Records". The latest record reached on 2006, when 12 aircraft flew backwards (upside-down) for 30 seconds, for the distance of three thousand meters. The event happened at the Air Force Academy – Academia da Força Aérea (AFA) in Pirassununga city. On 1996, the squadron broke its first record, when ten aircrafts performed an inverted flight for 30 seconds, a mark never achieved before. On its fiftieth anniversary year, 2002, the EDA reached one more record for the inverted flight of eleven airplanes.

The Smoke Squadron – A Esquadrilha da Fumaça is made up of military from the Brazilian Air Force. There are currently thirteen airman officers, an airplanes specialist, a doctor, three Social Communication officers, and a team of graduated specialists, acting at the administrative and at the aircraft maintenance areas – gently known as “Guardian Angels”. The soldiers complete the team, collaborating at the daily routine.

Previous Activations:

Dear friends, after the long marathon that lasted 11 days and took thousands kilometers of flight, I am back home. So many memorable days that will be remembered with much appreciation. All the reception and the welcoming warmth throughout the stay were outstanding. The initial objectives for the activation were crowned with complete success and all the activities performed, exceeded the most optimistic expectations.

The activation took place on the rainy season (March to July), but throughout the staying period on the island the rain was rare and short-lived (few minutes). The sun did shine strong and the weather was magnificent in order to appreciate the island in all its splendor.

The propagation conditions were, at most, fair conditions, with bands completely closed in the period such as for 160m, 80m, 6m and 10m. The bands 12m and 17m showed at the best condition and they allowed several QSO on many modes. The bands 20m and 40m also allowed excellent QSO with very pleasant surprises, allowing contacts with countries in Oceania, Asia, Middle East, and others.

The total time of operation was lower, compared to the previous activations, but even so were performed thousands of QSO with amateur radio friends all over the world. Even with weak propagation I highlight special moments: reviewing by the radio my dear friend Mr. "Zorro" JH1AJT, and the privilege to make another friend from Australia, Mr. Graham - VK3GA (QSO phone 20m), also Mr. Andy EC1CZL nice surprise from Spain. The weather conditions were perfect and tourist activities, dining and socializing with friends were very well enjoyed.

I want to thank everyone who contributed to the success of the activation, with their presence, the spots and guidance to colleagues at QRG. Especially to my inseparable and encourager friend PT2AW - Paulo Milito for all the unconditional support and company on all times.

Airspace Control Detachment at Fernando de Noronha:

The realization of this activation was possible thanks to the valuable support and the welcome of the Command Detachment Control Fernando de Noronha Airspace in the person of the commander, Lieutenant Excellency Mr. Marcio Vieira and all his crew. The welcome warmth, providing all the infrastructure were decisive factors for the success of the operation.

Commander Lieutenant Márcio and PYØNY - Jan

Even though I was thousands of kilometers away from home for several days, the daily contact with my brothers in arms made me feel like as  truly at home. I register my best thanks to all these brave warriors of the Atlantic!

I share with you, radio amateurs around the world, the honor I had to participate the daily routine of these valiant warriors. Every day they begin their valiant labor defending the Brazilian airspace, as well as the support and the control for all civil air traffic hundreds of kilometers from the continent at the Atlantic Ocean, with the raising of our National Flag and their electrifying War slogan!
