In 1990, while stationed in CFB Chilliwack, British Columbia, I was issued my amateur radio lincence with callsign VE7IFI. I used VHF/UHF gear, an Icom 229 mobile and an Icom 2SAT handheld; voice only.
In 1992 I was posted to 5 Wing Goose Bay, Newfoundland-Labradour, and my callsign was changed to VO2GPS. I still only used VHF/UHF gear, Kenwood 732 mobile and two Alincos DJ-580 handhelds; still voice only.
In 1994 I was posted to 17 Wing Winnipeg, Manitoba, and my callsign was changed to VE4GPS. While still using VHF/UHF with the same gear, I added packet radio to my modes using a KAM tnc.
In 2002 I was posted to CFSU Ottawa, Ontario, where I was able to keep my Manitoba callsign but added VA3OMP and VE3FSR to my callsign list. While in Ottawa I entered into the world of D-Star and have added a lot of equipment to the shack including GMSK modems, FreeStar system, Allstar link, DV Dongle, etc. I started to dabble in HF but not much to mention so far.
I am a retired from the Canadian Forces and currently employed servicing alcohol breathalyzers and speed radars. I still live in Ottawa.
I am a member of the Radio Amateurs of Canada and the West Carleton Amateur Radio Club.
