Hi everyone. I'm located in Kanata Ontario - about a 20 minute drive west of Ottawa.
Presently I am operating using only a dipole wire antenna about 25 feet up in a tree out front of the house. Using anything from around 125 watts from my old Yaesu FT-102 or as much as around 400 watts from my old Yeasu FL-2100Z linear with Chinese tubes. The FT-102 has three 6146 Chinese finals in it and the FL2100Z has two 872B Chinese tubes in it. So far (five years), no issues with the Chinese 6146's and the linear's 872B's are still strong with no issues either.
I've recently reconfigured the station and have the luxury of full access to the back of all my equipment - something I've wanted to do for about 25 years !
Been a Ham since 1979 and I work in the Telecom industry (Satellite based services to Canada's north).
With the exception of my DSTAR handheld, I have no equipment newer than about 25 years old. Not that I only like vintage stuff - but it's what gets given to me (broken), then I restore it and get it back on the air. Most all of my equipment arrived in the station that way - broken and cheap !
Hope we've chatted - and if so, thanks and see you again. If not - give me a call !
Oh - and we all need to pitch Amateur Radio. To be honest, I thought Amateur Radio was going the way of the dinosaur. I figured the population was aging and declining. Turns out about 740,000 Americans have Amateur Radio licences - up 60% from 1981 and the number is growing!
