I have been a ham since 1967. Since 1976 I held VE8AJ and in 1999 we became a new territory and I chose VY0CF for the old Chosen Frozen Network. I just liked it. I am the retired President of Nunavut Arctic College. Currently grandfather to 5!   QRP is of interest and portability interests me now running a Yaesu FT 817nd and a Buddistick off my ATV on the tundra. I have had a couple of great antennas that withstood the arctic winters- Cushcraft A3s and an old Gem Quad. At the cabin , I am using a Bravo 7 vertical from Harry Jones K9DXA from when he was here with Dick Illman AH6EZ in 2012. I recently put up a 40m multiband windom and trying a Delta Loop. On air an old TS50 and a Yaesu FT-857d. QRP is the FT-817nd, a Ten Tec 4020 and a MTR. W1JSB converted a KX1 for me as a Radio-Set-Go. I mostly run seasonally off a solar system at my cabin on Diane River 20 km west of Rankin Inlet from May to October but do run from my home QTH with the same rigs. Ant 40m Skyloop. SKCC 14922. NAQCC 8163. Good DX and 73 ...Victor Yankee Zero Chosen Frozen. HIHI

QRP from 75' North off NA009 Devon Island at Croker Bay looking at towering glaciers.  This was a learning experience and warm dry clothing, boots and camera gear took precedence over my hame gear.  One Oceans Northwest Passage for 13 days on the Akademik Ioffe- a Russian research vessel.  I ran a Ten Tec 4020 on 20 meters CW with a 3.5 amp hour NiHM battery.  Palm Paddle and a short run of RG 174u.  Earbuds.  Sotabeams 4.1m fibreglass pole. The antenna is the PackTenna Mini cut for 20m.  Flat Flat Flat SWR.  I worked often late afternoon into the grey line from the top deck.  Over the Pole I logged stations from Sweden and down to Spain. South I got as far as Oregon and Texas.  Averaged about 4,000km. The Eastern US seaboard was 599+ my RST from 449 to 579. Apparently I was the first Ham to do this on that ship. All Marine Mobile.  I had lots of advice from IOTA folks but in the end decided to put a toe in the water and operate on a future trip with more experience, power, and organization.  VY0CF/MM  August 28 to September 9 2016.

If you have never seen NA 185 it is just off Rankin Inlet. Here is Marble Island. A historic place where the Knight expedition perished in the 1720's. You have to crawl up the beach the first time you go there when you land. It is a superstition and tradition among Inuit because the sailors they encountered were starving. You can see the old graves, stone building site, and sunken ships. Lots of polar bears, whales, and seal around there. Did I mention too many bears?

Hope to work there soon.
