Graduated from Atlantic Highlands High School in Atlantic Highlands, N.J. in 1960. Joined the Air Force that same year. I spent 8 years on active duty, 3 years as a Morse Intercept Operator, stationed at Peshawar Air Station in Peshawar, Pakistan. The remaining 5 years in the states were spent as an Administrative Speciaist.

While stationed at Kincheloe AFB, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan,  I  got my ham ticket in 1964 in Sault St. Marie, Michigan. My next duty assignment was Westover AFB, Mass. This is where I got my first One call sign. I continued in the military as a civilian spending 2 years in the Air Force Reserve and 3 years in the Air National Guard as a teletype operator and supervisor in the Comm Center in Westfield, Mass.  After migrating thru several call signs, I went for my Extra Class in the mid 1970's, acquiring my present call-sign W1PI. This call-sign was a reissued call previously belonging to Silent Key Fred Bigalow of Hyde Park, Massachusets.

I moved to Florida in 1983 and presently reside in Sebring, Florida. After finishing 35 years in the newspaper industry, I retired in 2004.

I am known to most of my friends by my nick name Clay Welsh. Although I no longer operate on HF, I am still active on 2 Meters and 70 Centimeters. I am also active on Qsonet's Cormac CQ100 Voip Transceiver, Echolink and my TeamSpeak 3 Server, W1PI Ham Radio Server,

I often monitor the Highlands County ARC (W4HCA) repeater 147.045/442.350 PL100 along with 146.520 and 147.550 simplex, so if you're in the area, give me a call. I borrowed this last paragraph from Wes, W1LIC.

PS: Anyone that has had a CW or Voice contact with me on any Ham Band, during the period between 1995 and 2016 has been talking to a Bootlegger. I have NOT operated on any HF Band during that interval. I am continuing to receive QSL cards from stations that allege they have spoken with me. If someone tells you their call is W1PI, challenge them.
