After many years without an Amateur Radio Club, students at Newport's Rogers High School combined with the JROTC program launched a new amateur radio club  --

W1VRC  "Viking Radio Club" in 2015.

W1VRC radio and computer club is not limited to JROTC members and all Rogers students are welcome to participate.

Radio is all around us ... our cell phones are radios, but there is way more you can do with radios, computers and the internet, and W1VRC is the place to explore.

Radio is Just a Keyboard Away!

AUGUST 7 2016 Completed [See Video >  ]

[Starting Setup around 9am, and running til after 4pm]

NPOTA AA24 Activation

of Touro Synagogue Historic Site, Newport, RI

Also participating:

  • N1ASA -- All Saints STEAM Academy, Middletown, RI
  • W1OHP -- SSV Oliver Hazard Perry [Sailing School Vessel], Newport, RI

Open Mike or CW time available for other School and College Clubs!

Site conditions:

LOCATION: Midway up 88 ft high hill [ from sea level ], antenna is facing West at about 270 degrees ... and pretty much blocked to East, which by the way is the Atlantic Ocean.  Also South is the Atlantic Ocean straight to Puerto Rico.
NOTE: DAYTON OHIO is at 263 degrees nearly straight west from this location.

NOISE FACTORS:  5 National Grid power transformers with related power lines, mounted on 60ft poles within 100 ft of antenna, 2 building A/C compressors within 50ft. Newport County Court House across street [ large steel-framed office building ].

QSO Reports:  To simplify we will give out 59 AA24 to stations that we have good copy on, 55 AA24 to stations that come in OK 1st time, and 33 AA24 to stations we have to work with to get log information.  This is to give chasers an idea of what conditions are here. On the test activation July 26, we realized that many stations were hearing us better than we were hearing them, probably because of the local noise level, but the band was in and out and within minutes a marginal signal could become readable.

  1. 183 contacts ... 87% on 20M, 7% on 40M, 3% on 75M, 3% DX ---conditions initially zero, but perked up in afternoon. We could hear a lot of just uncopyable callers in the downtown area high noise, but a number of 59+ stations would pop in randomly.

Mini Maker Faire -- Oct. 17, 2015

W1VRC demonstrated an on-the-air Field Radio Station in a milk crate using a Icom 706 MkIIG transciever, a MFJ 949D tuner into a 135 ft long window-line-fed doublet antenna, using battery power.

A dual screen laptop connected to the building WiFi was used for remote rig operations, logging and contact spotting.

W1VRC worked DX in Mexico and Israel though a remote link internet using a radio station in Kentucky. Newport's Mayor Napolitano visited with us.
