While attending school there,I worked for WYZE (am) as announcer/DJ. Returning to North Carolina the next year, I worked briefly as announcer/DJ at High Point's WNOS (am). In 1961 I accepted a position as DJ at Greensboro's WPET (am)and eventually advanced to program director. While working for WCOG as program director/disc jockey, I joined the Greensboro Police Department in 1965 and continued to work part-time at WCOG.

I gave up radio broadcasting in 1968 and concentrated on my law enforcement career. I was also a member of the Underwater Recovery Team, the Special Response Team (SRT), and an instructor in pursuit driving for the Greensboro Police Academy.  I also received the department's Purple Heart and Medal of Valor in 1993 as a result of a shooting incident with a drug dealer.
