After teaching science in Central Florida high schools for 32 years, I retired to the mountains of Western North Carolina in 2009. The first year or so I spent building a new home with room for my wife's and my hobbies. Karen has her large quilting studio with ample office space for her genealogy research and I have my generously sized woodworking/woodturning shop in the basement. In the summer of 2011 I received my Tech license (June) then followed up with my General (August). The summer of 2013 (June) I upgraded to Amateur Extra. Most of my operating is with the digital modes of PSK and RTTY.

So far I have joined in on several local and state nets. I've recently become active in a local ARES group and taken the required FEMA courses.  A lot to learn!

My shack for HF is simple and consists of a Kenwood TS-590S transceiver radiating through an AlphaDelta DX-CC dipole 10 meters up in nearby trees. My computer is an Apple MacBook Pro running Fldigi. I have added an ACOM 1000 HF+6 linear amplifier for RTTY and HF nets. This combination works well and I'm getting good reports so I won't be messing with it anytime soon!

I have been a member of ARES for Cherokee County, NC. We are meeting monthly at the Robert Penland Senior Center at 69 Alpine Street (behind the courthouse) in Murphy, NC on the second Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm. We hold a net on K4AIH (147.045, minus offset, T151.5) at 7:00 pm on Thursdays. Please email for further information if you live in Cherokee County.

At this time I QSL with eQsl.cc(AG).

Operating PSK31/RTTY on Field Day 2014 with my Kenwood TS-590S directly connected by a USB cable to myApple MacBook. A large deep-cycle marine battery powers the rig and supplies power to charge the laptop.  In the foreground, a small 7.5Ah battery powers my HT radio with 35w amplifier.
