Jefferson Amateur Radio Club - W5GAD

The Jefferson Amateur Radio Club was founded in 1956 in Metairie, Louisiana, a suburb of New Orleans. In 1961, they moved the club to a donated building in the Metairie Playground (Now Wally Pontiff, Jr. Playground), where it exists still today.

Our club features several operating positions, with two ICOM 756 Pro III’s, a Kenwood TS-2000, and a fourth open position, designated the “plug and play” position, that has power connectors and antenna leads to the antenna patch panel. This is to allow members to bring their own radio or for one to be set up to test.  Additionally, we have a VHF/UHF station equipped with an ICOM 5100, Kenwood D-710, Yaesu FTM-400XDR and an ICOM ID1. Each radio station has its own dedicated computer and monitor.

Our antenna farm includes a STEPP-IR three element 10-20 meter beam on a 53’ jack-up tower, a Mosley Classic 33 10-15-20 meter beam with a 6 meter beam mounted above on an approx. 40’ telephone pole, a Hy-Gain AV-640 vertical, and an off-center fed Carolina Windom, which covers up to 160 meters. We also have use of a 130’ cell tower that is located in our back yard, and have several VHF/UHF antennas between 60’ to 90’.

The club maintains three repeaters: A 444.000 repeater at approximately 200’ in central Metairie, a D-Star full stack (2 meter, 70 CM, 1.2 GHz voice and 1.2 GHz data), located near the Mississippi River, and a 147.240 repeater located at the Clubhouse at approx. 90’.

We host two nets, one on the UHF repeater on Wednesday nights at 8:00 PM and one on the D-Star B Module, and Reflector 048C, on the third Tuesday of each month at 9:00 PM.

JARC sponsors many operating events each year, including Field Day, various HF contests on phone, data and CW, International Light House and Lightship Weekend, National Parks On The Air, and most recently we activated PT-305, the only combat veteran PT Boat from World War II still in operation for Museum Ships Weekend.

JARC is also proud to be one of only 14 VEC’s in the country and have regularly scheduled tests each month. In the last year we hosted study groups for both Amateur Extra and Technician, and will soon have our first One Day Technician Class.
