The photo is of Debra McCartt, Mayor of Amarillo, after receiving an explanation of amateur radio and Field Day from Henry Janhsen, N5HPJ, President of the Panhandle Amateur Radio Club during the 2009 event.

For more information about our Field Day and other activities see: http://www.w5wx.org

Field Day 2009 took place in Southeast Park again. The operation was shutdown right after supper Saturday when a storm with 65 MPH winds and heavy rain joined us. At that time we only had about 120 contacts. A posting was made on the Field Day Soapbox that contains six photographs and a few more words about our FD 2009 operation.

Those working W5WX during the Texas QSO Party desiring a QSL card, please QSL to the P.O. Box, include a SASE and we will be delighted to provide a QSL confirming the Panhandle County from which we operated (have to be in the log though).

The following is a piece of Panhandle Amateur Radio Club history uncovered by John Robinson, WD5FOI...

PARC History

The first club for amateur radio in Amarillo was formed in 1938 and for some 16 years was known as the Amarillo Amateur Club. During that same period no dues were assessed and the club was a more or less informal group that met twice monthly. L.E. Gibbons, W5PCN, was the first president. Others who were very active at the time were Jim Potts, Horace Wilson, Bert Arnold, Al Reville, Jim Redfearn, G.L. Shelbourne, Robert Kenstrand, Malcolm Clack, Ted Williams, Frank Fagan, Curtis Coble, Don Stewart, Rich Richardson, Bill Torrey, Dory Frantz, Wheeler Welchel, Allan Reppert, E.B. Gish, Lawrence Martin, Tex Smith, and Jim Blossom.

In 1954 the club name was changed to The Panhandle Amateur Radio Club and it was about this time that a memorial station bearing the call letters W5WX was established in the honor or Bert Arnold who operated under the call for many years before he passed away. “Uncle” Bert, as he was known to the many amateurs at the time, is really the grand ol’ man of amateur radio in Amarillo. He was working with wireless sets shortly after Marconi invented it. He signed up for the Navy in 1902 when he was 18 and served as a Signalman. At the time only a very few were tinkering with wireless, and of course everything was homebrew.

Over the years the club has met in many locations. In the early years the group met at the old Manhattan Café on Polk Street. Following this the club met at the Potter County Courthouse, then at the Highway Patrol offices. Other meeting places included the Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. Building on Tyler St., the Soncy School Building just west of he city, the Red Cross Building, and the Southwestern Public Service Co. facilities just off Bell St.

Over the years the group has sponsored various swapfests and hamfests. Many amateurs started in the hobby through training classes sponsored by the organization. The club has participated in Field Day most of the time since it was formed. The club has also sponsored an annual watermelon feast since about 1954.
